Phil Sentner RIP

Pal Phil Sentner, a stalwart on the Vermont jazz scene died not long ago, I found out today when Root Doctor got an email from the cat who runs the Boxholder label. He'd been ill with cancer for a long time and finally was taken down by a heart attack.

He lived in the small town of Peacham, Vt, which is a hell of a way from any jazz venue but it's hard to think of a show through the years that leaned close to out or all the way, where he wasn't present. He was a real lover of the music, and a hell of a nice guy, to boot. His drives home were anything but short but if there was a show, he was there. We weren't surprised to find him in Boston for a Fire In The Valley concert, either, years ago.

Very sad. I had an email correspondence going with him for a few years apart from seeing him at shows. He'd planned to come hear Cooper-Moore here, just recently. We had a correspondence about the after-hours party right up to that morning, and I'd expected to see him at the gig, but was later told he'd been too ill from a chemo session.

Not long after, he had a heart attack in a post office and died.

There will be a big hole in the Vermont scene that Phil had long occupied.

RIP, brother.

Phil will be missed by everyone on the scene here in Western Massachusetts. He had stopped coming down for the concerts. That must have been at the point that cancer grabbed hold.
This is all very sad. His spirit will always prevailed.

He was a really nice guy and a total regular on the scene, as ubiquitous up here as Ubiquitous Don is in NYC.

Phil was also a great moral support to me during Bronwyn's homehealth wars. He chewed some state honchos a new asshole several times on her behalf. Through it all, when we communicated, he was always wanting to hear about Bronwyn's situation and if asked about his own, he'd toss it off with a shrug as unimportant.

Wicked nice guy, and a real jazz guy, way on the scene.

He'll be missed.
