I have to take my girls to sleep-away camp on Sunday in Chester, CT. The way we've done it in the past is to take 95. What a nightmare! Does anyone have an alternate!!?? We would be coming from Park Slope, Brooklyn. And what about coming back? Thanks!
Tough to see a decent alternate without going way out of your way. On the way back you could loop north and end up hitting Rt 7 in west CT which is a very pretty drive.
btw, we used to take 95 to Point Judith, RI (for the ferry to Block Island) every year and never had any particular problems. Just leave around 4AM.

Why not take the Merritt Parway up to New Haven? This is the way I always go on my trips to New Haven and Northhampton Mass, and it will at least carry you past that horrible Greenwich/Stamford/Bridgeport stretch on 95. It's pretty much as fast as 95, but much more scenic and with no trucks.
