Charlie Mariano Tribute
For all fans of the great American alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano (who also played/plays soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophones, miscellaneous flutes, and the nagaswaram), and who got little awareness in his native country after moving to Europe:
I proudly present my
Charlie Mariano Tribute website.
Enjoy

Great job! He's been a favorite of mine since I first heard The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady.

Charlie Mariano certainly deserves all of the accolades he receives. Nice job!
I was privileged and proud to be in his presence in the early 60's in Boston. What a fine player and fine man!

Thanks, Valerie. That's fine. I've only been aware of Monday Michiru, Charlie's daughter with Toshiko Akiyoshi.
I talked to Charlie Mariano (who lives in Cologne, Germany) on the phone. He told me that he wasn't tracking his enourmas output on recordings. So he couldn't be of any help with info. But he took the time to check his files for the address of Robert G. Pettibone who contributed the discography/sessionography to Lothar Lewien's excellent Charlie Mariano biography "Charlie Mariano - Tears Of Sound, Wanderer zwischen den Musikwelten" which - to my knowledge - hasn't been issued in English.
Charlie Mariano was very friendly though never having spoken to me before.
I contacted him again (via his friend, bassist Dieter Ilg), and he sent me an email just yesterday confirming that he got my email from Dieter Ilg, and will check the site as soon as he's got some time. He's still touring, and I just checked the site of his agency (LevinsonConcerts) already announcing concerts for the year 2008. Charlie will celebrate his 84th birthday on November 12th this year!
I'm quite familiar with his recent music back to the '80s (having heard him live with Sangam in Berlin, and on several occasions with the fabulous United Jazz + Rock Ensemble here in Stuttgart), and I'm looking forward to checking out his earlier recordings with Charles Mingus, Stan Kenton, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, etc.
I'm happy to experience that there are some jazz enthusiasts in the USA who've not forgotten this fabulous musician, and are still interested in his music.
Cheers, Thomas

For me he found his mature sound on the horn by the early '60s, when he recorded with Mingus. The earlier albums with Shelly Manne are great, but his characteristic tone wasn't all there yet, even less so on the earlier stuff I have on the Serge Chaloff Mosaic box. His Deep in a Dream is one of my favorite albums of recent years.
