Not being able to open JC

It seems like about once a week for a while now I'm unable to access JC in the morning for certain periods of time. I know Gordon's asked about the same thing. Is there some kind of maintenance work that happens during those times or what? It happened again to me this morning for a more than an hour.

It happened to me today at about 7 a.m. ET. I don't know how long the problem lasted because I went back to sleep.

It didn't seem like a typical server problem; rather, it seemed as if the site wasn't "live," if that makes any sense. My browser (Firefox) didn't return an error message but instead loaded what was essentially a blank page. Both http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/ and http://www.jazzcorner.com/ were down.

Lois, if the problem is due to maintenance, is it possible to confine maintenance to the wee hours of the morning ET, as I think you've said used to be the case? For some Speakeasy users, even as early as 7 a.m. ET is prime viewing time.

Blue, all kinds of people use Speakeasy. Some work at nite and would like to unwind when they come home. Some like Ollie's friends from England live in a different time zone. If indeed the problem is due to maintenance all we would need to know at what time it takes place and everybody could adjust their lifes accordingly.

I get the IE error message that the browser is unable to find JC. Where I live, Eastern Time, it's normally early morning for me.

It happened again yesterday morning. It it's intentional, it would be nice to see a message stating the JC is down for maintenance, be back at HH:MM.

Uli, you must bend to the will of the diurnal east coasters.

. . . a category to which I don't belong. For that reason, I'm often on the board in the wee hours ET, and time after time, my companions are one or two other members max, about 30 guests, and a million searchbots. For whatever reason, the population of JC members seems to be quite low in the wee hours ET, which is why, IIRC, that's when routine maintenance used to be done.

IMO, there are justifications for an approach that's U.S. East Coast-centric or even NYC-centric--another category to which I don't belong. But I'm not intent on championing such an approach (or the brute majority, etc.), and it's not up to me anyway.

The backup goes on at 6am - it use to take about 20 minutes but as the database has grown - it can take up to 2 hours. We do it every morning. There are some bbs that do their backup just once a week -- but I'm too paranoid to lose all your wonderful posts (smile)

I'll talk to Doc and see if we might be able to move it back to 5am EST.

Peace and light
Lois

Thanks for the information, Lois. I've been wondering about that for quite a while.

For me, it's like a morning without a newspaper. I've been logging on every morning for so long I can't remember how long it's been.

I should be put out of my misery, really.
