Forget Nostradamus - Michael Stipe saw it all!!

WARNING - LONG, POINTLESS AND POSSIBLY STUPID POST FOLLOWS:

Forget Nostradamas - I think that the real visionary is Michael Stipe - Lets examine, shall we say, ''Its the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine) from, when? Oh about 1989 and see what Mick had to say and if it came true.

“That's great, it starts with an earthquake”,

There are about 20 earthquakes per year but I am guessing that this one relates to the one in Turkey, you know, the really big one a few years back...or maybe Northridge but that was earlier or maybe the one that happened in North Queensland last Tuesday..

“Birds and snakes, an aeroplane”

Clearly a reference to the Twin Towers ....aeroplanes being birds and all and the varmints who committed the deed were snakes.

“and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.”

this refers to the attacks on free speech that have occurred post 9/11. The oblique reference to vomic Bruce conjures up his battles with the courts over the use of certain words. Ironically many of those words were of Yiddish extraction and given Amira Baraka poetry about world trade centre well you have to ask is there some strange co-relation of all this...some sinister underlying element of anti semetism arising in all the world’s literature?

“Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn”

Now haven't we all felt like this over the last few years. It seems every bit of news make you churn. This is the Old Testament brought to life with storms and pestilence. the churning of a community in crisis especially over the ‘stolen election’ of 2000

“world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.”

This is the whole Bush Mantra - served up right there!

“Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength,”

And if this doesn't refer to Osama Bin laden's exploits with a Tape and Video I don't know what else it can!

“Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height. ”

Another reference to Sept 11 - the fire-fighters

“Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.”

Wire in a fire obviously refers to the media hubbub over Iraq. The seven games refer to Sammy Sosa's Seven game suspensions for a corked bat! Spooky! whilst a government for hire refers to those neo-con lobbyists whose influence in the White House. A combat site is wherever Wolfie and Co wants it to be!

“Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. ”

The left wing eurotrash governments of places like France and the constant and trenchant criticism of US foreign policy throughout the 90’s.

“Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.”

This obviously refers to the growing international trend of so called investigational reporting. The tethered trumped line may relate to what ever sex scandal is being played out in the English Parliament or more probably to Michael Hutchence’s tragic demise.

“Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh,”

This ether refers to the friendly fire incident that cost the lives of those Canadians in Iraq especially the ‘fine, then uh-oh’ part or it refers to Joe Maneri through the eyes of Steve Reynolds - truly difficult to decipher.

“overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.”

“Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and
the revered and the right, right.”

This of course refers to Bob Dylan turning Christian in the late 1980’s

“You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty
psyched.”

Wow its like Mike fast forward to 2003 and saw a Bush press conference.

“Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.”

Ironically I saw the recent fire in the Eiffel Tower on the six o clock news! Was this a warning not to go to Paris??

“Slash and burn, return, ”

The first part refers to the first and second gulf wars and the second part refers to the California elections.

“listen to yourself churn.”

See above - a churn is an instrument by which one makes butter and butter was used quite liberally by Brando in LAST TANGO in PARIS with Maria Schneider whose career went down the chute and chute shares the same FIRST THREE LETTERS as Churn. Coincidence???? I think not!

“Locking in, uniforming, book burning,”

Though Book Burning is ‘timeless’ there have been a spate of recent events mostly focussed on that gnome of evil, Harry Potter which is, ironically referred to in the first part of the Quatrains, ooops line which refers to the many millions who have purchased the HP books.

“blood letting. Every motive escalate.”

It doesn’t take a genius to look to the future of the world and see blood and the escalation of violence thus I take this line to be a mere prop - a line upon which to hang other visions

“Automotive incinerate“.

With these words Stipe foresees the convoys of refugees blown apart by laser guided weapons and so called smart bombs in Iraq and in the Balkans

“Light a candle, light a votive.”

Is this a cryptic remark about the overwhelming desire of most of the world for peace? The image of lighting a Votive candle to the blessed virgin takes us into a whole complex world of religious beliefs and passions and in this context may refer to a new fundamentalism.

“Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no
fear cavalier. ”

Clinton and the clamouring of the pro-conservatives for is scalp or ass whichever they could get.
Clinton’s actions as a well known pants man were those of a heel and he was (a) crushed and (b) he crushed Dole in ‘96 after which he had no fear and acted rather cavalier.

“Renegade steer clear!”

How prescient cause Renegade is probable the worst of the Command and Conquer games

“A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies.”

Many people think that this part is political but it isn’t - it just refers to Golf ! Baton Rouge wanted to hold the best tight lies tournamént at the Aubudon Open

“Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.”

As far as I can tell this is about Northern Ireland where the IRA and The UDA and the Government have spent the last few years trying to come up with a peace plan that everyone can live with ....well either that or wee Georgie’s road map to peace

“The other night I dreamt of knives,”

Some people believe when you dream of knives its a symbol of upcoming illness or misfortune. Is Stipe talking about the sickness in the soul of the world or was he just talking about ÚP’ a REM record that sucked

“continental drift divide.”

In Feb 2003 Joe Liebermann made a speech to the Wehrkunde conference in which he addressed halting the continental drift and addressing US-Europe relations. Notice how this contains all three words.....continental, drift and divide!

“Mountains sit in a line,”

This may be misread or misheard . the Line perhaps means Lion and it is plain that a Mountain can’t physically sit on a Lion but metaphorically at least the Lion can be in a case and thus with the vast bulk of the mountain sitting over it the Mountain could be said to sit on a Lion. But what does this mean anyway? Well the lion is a symbol of strength and endeavour and as such I can only interpret this as the hearts and souls of Mankind., our inner ‘Lion’’ has been force to cover by modern life. Alternatively of course that could be just a crock of shit.

“Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester
Bangs.”

One of the craftier ones this - at first glance it appears to be just a list of names but on closer inspection one can see that all the first names start with L and then e , then it becomes clear this refers to ‘le’ a term commonly used in French and beloved of those who speak in faux Françoise. (Le Francoise Dickh**d) This shows Stipe foresaw the anti-French sentiment that swept the US in 2003.

“Birthday party,”

Seminal play by Pinter, Nick Cave band but in this case was about my Brothers birthday party last year. An old rocker, he turned 60 and it was a great night.

“cheesecake”

This is about the J-los. and the Anastasias , the Britneys and their ilk. the celebrity of low cut jeans and a pretty face. Cheesecake baby!

“jelly bean, boom! ”

Could this be referring to the explosion in the use of Amphetamines in the world in the 90’s for as we all know ‘Jelly Bean’is street slang for speed.

“You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.”

And with that it finishes. Stipe predicting a world turning increasing dumb (the reference to slamming books is very symbolic here as is the reference to ‘neck’ which we all know is a contraction of red neck meaning a certain kind of person known to have either a US or a Rebel flag on the bumper of their F100’s.

Now lets all sing along

It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it
and I feel fine!

(It's time I had some time alone)

But wait that not all - There is something hidden in the second verse

“Six o'clock - TV hour Don’t get caught in foreign
towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself
churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood
letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh- oh, this means no
fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,
tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
offer me alternaties and I decline.””

and its so easy when you know the code that this verse obviously makes the phrase

g e o r g e W b u s h i s e v i l

All you have to do is take some of the letters from various words and you can make that phrase! Amazing! Yeah I thought so too. It just goes to show that Stipe knew what he was doing back there in the late eighties and he gave us a warning!!!!

Yeah, I like "Generals" the best! Wasn't too keen on Tiberian Sun though.

Thought provoking. Henster McSter: Stipe's prophesizing genius was almost too obvious.

Why not apply the same analysis to less obvious but potentially as important prophets as Kansas or, maybe Jethro Tull?

Oh yeah, and clearly Wayne Newton was umbelievably prescient about the difficulty we'd have capturing Osama Bin Laden in Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast.
