Ike Turner - R.I.P.

The man who, whatever his faults, blazed a trail for rock'n'roll is dead.

whoa!! i had heard a rumor weeks ago that he was ill and in the hospital. i worked for him in the '70s in his recording studio but hadn't seen him since he played in an oakland nightclub right after his release from prison.

he sure was a vital and vibrant man and it's hard to imagine him sick, let alone deceased, that's for sure.

I just picked up a compilation of Ike's music with his Kings Of Rhythm band earlier this year, and it's FUNKY. RIP Ike, thanks for the music.

His reassessment will come in time. I don't think a lot of people know he was there at the very beginning of R&R. Upstaged by his wife (and Phil Spector), he didn't get all the credit he deserved.

RIP

Yes, indeed. Ike's contributions to American music are formidable. I wonder what Jimi Hendrix would have sounded like without the trail that Ike blazed on guitar?

RIP

i'm not into defending some of Ike's behavior, but your calling him "despicable" is probably because of his beating up Tina, right? do you know of any guys in your personal life that have hit women? just curious if you call them "despicable".

Regardless of who did it and why, that kind of abuse is dispicable, it may not take away from the talent, but personally, it's a sorry trait.

i agree it's a very sorry trait in anyone. unfortunately, it's an all-too-common one as well.

When my old friend Dewey Weber died, they showed his at sea paddle out on television, with Sonny Vardeman scattering his ashes and leis on the ocean, and one of the television announcers said "Rest in Peace Dewey" and I had to laugh as that would have mortified Dewey.

Dewey was called, "The Little Man on Wheels", if he wasn't on the go, if he wasn't always doing something physical and wild, he wasn't happy, so God Speed Dewey

God Speed Ike.

Little Richard, Phil Spector speak at the funeral

and Phil lashes out at Ike's critics calling “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” a >>“piece of trash movie,” inspiring applause from some mourners.

“Ike made Tina the jewel she was,” Spector said.

Spector also accused Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg of “demonizing” Turner on their talk shows.<<

>> Little Richard, who described his friend as “one of the greatest musicians I have ever met in my life.”

Richard said that Turner’s breakthrough rock ’n’ roll hit, “Rocket 88,” “shook my soul.”

“I took that same introduction and made ‘Good Golly, Miss Molly,”’ he said. “I took that same thing and made a huge hit.”<<

Off of Ike for a second here, but seeing Little Richard's comments about Ike let me remember what he said about Tina, "God made Tina Turner to show other women how to dance in high heels". Too cute the way he said it, as only he could.

valerie sorry i haven't responded to your post quicker been working alot. any man who hits a woman is a despicable piece of shit. and yes i would call any one i know that to their face if that was their m.o. be careful ,you don't want to make it sound as if you think its okay to abuse women since we all know you're not like that. despicable man, incredible talent. i stand behind my statement.

i think i made my point clear that i, not for one minute, condoned ike's behavior towards tina in the abuse department. just fyi, to drive home the point, i am one of the people who helped tina "escape" from ike! when she ran away from him, she came to my house briefly before going to homes of other friends of ours. i introduced her to buddhism which helped her gather and maintain her strength and courage to change her life. i also happen to think that ike never got his due for his enormous musical talents. 'nuf sed?

just heard via CNN that the toxology reports said that Ike died of a cocaine overdose and other mitigating circumstances. i had believed that he had been "clean" for a very long time. my guess is that he knew he was on his way out so felt, "what the f__k"!!

I wish someone had been around to smack Tina in the past twenty years or so. Her Euro pop is an abomination. Every time Turner is on the stage with Sting or Pavarotti or Bryan Adams, a little bit of the soul of music dies. IMHO.

This just in:

Tina Turner will not be appearing with Pavarotti again any time in the foreseeable future
