Pictures on threads

I've tried every thing I can think of, but when pictures are posted on the threads, they don't show up.

Any advice.

Clint, I still have copies of PMs containing "picture" instructions that I sent you some time ago. I wish you had let me know that you were still having trouble.

Let's work on a specific case.

1. Please post the URL (address) of an image that isn't showing up--any image.

2. Are you trying to post it as an Attachment or are you trying to post it using JC's IMG function ?

Posting more than one album cover (or any other images from the Internet):

Don't use an Attachment. Instead, use JC's Image (IMG) function. That's what the folks posting lots of album covers are doing. Something like 15 images of that kind are allowed per post, and there's no size or resolution limit. (You may know it as "hotlinking." It's permitted at JC.)

HOW TO USE THE IMG FUNCTION
(to post pictures from the Internet)

1. Right-click on the image--the picture itself--on the Net. (Don't use a Google thumbnail. Visit the site where the picture is and use the picture itself.)

2. Click on Properties and Copy the URL (address) from the Properties box. If you see "Copy Image Location" on the menu, you can do that instead.

3. Hit the IMG button on JC's "Post a Reply" form.

4. Paste the URL into the form that will pop up and hit "OK."

5. A line of code of the following pattern will appear in your message:

First [IMG]
Then the URL of your image, beginning with http://
Then [/IMG]

That'll be all on one line.

Make sure that the "http://" part appears only once, not twice.

6. If you want to, you can type in a line of code of that pattern manually instead of using the IMG button.

Putting a picture of yourself on the signature (down where you list the instruments you play):

Edit: Well, the software said that I successfully uploaded a signature picture, but I didn't see it appearing anywhere--not in my posts and not in my Profile. I'll leave this part of the post here anyway, but that's a mystery to be resolved.

As far as I know, Option 1--linking to a picture's URL on the Internet--doesn't work. I tried it in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

That leaves Option 2, uploading a picture from your computer. As you can see from Sand's example, any picture with the allowable resolution in fact needs to be quite small.

If you're trying to manipulate the picture using your own software, you can try reducing the "Save" quality and a couple of other tricks to get that low a resolution. It's a little too complicated for me to explain here.

Here are two alternatives:

1. Join a free image hosting and storage website such as Flickr.com (which I recommend). Upload your picture to Flickr. Then

--click on the photo in your Flickr photostream

--click on "All Sizes"

--and you'll see two sizes, Thumbnail and Square, that have low enough resolutions (and are small enough) to use as a signature. Download one of those small pics back onto your computer, and you'll be able to use it in your signature!

2. Send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail address. E-mail me the pic you want to use, and I'll give you a version with a low-enough resolution to be used in your signature. (If you can post the pic in a regular JC post, you can do that instead of e-mailing it to me.)

Putting a picture under your name on the left side of the screen (they're called Avatars):

Again, you need to start with a picture that doesn't exceed the allowable size or resolution. According to the instructions, the maximum is currently 100 by 100 pixels or 351.6 KB (whichever is smaller). So . . .

1. Again, Flickr will produce two sizes of pics (Square and Thumbnail) that have allowable specs for use as an Avatar. For an avatar, you should be able to "grab the photo's URL" (which Flickr provides) and use the option to link the photo to JC. Or, once again, you can download one of those small Flickr pics back to your computer, then use it for your avatar.

2. Or once again, send me a PM (or post the pic you want to use in a regular post, if you can). I'll give you a version that you can use as an avatar.

If you're already trying to post an avatar picture that meets the allowable specs, please let me know exactly what's happening when you try. [Edit: I see that you posted an avatar!]

--overly restrictive as to allowable size and resolution for pictures that are only on one's own computer. Much more freedom and a savings of JC's bandwidth are provided by storing pics from one's computer at a free service such as Flickr and posting them on JC using the IMG function.

Well, I was interested in the artistic effect of the frame around the image with the attached words that together with the blurring effect of low resolution of the center image element form a larger image that in the end is seen as one big picture that give the spectators a sense of belonging, a sense of time and space.

I checked the options and I've had the box checked all the time.

I'm adding some more memory to the the computer, but I don't know if it will make a difference.

This is very frustrating.

It's surely a software problem, not a hardware problem. It probably involves a simple "block/allow images from ________" setting or a security-level setting--either on your browser(s) or on your firewall software, if any.

I think I can ask the questions that will enable some JCer (not necessarily me) to solve the problem. Will you work with me?

If not (assuming that you don't prefer to work with JCers other than me), I suggest that you call in a computer repairperson. Make sure that he/she handles software problems, not just hardware problems. He/she should be able to solve the problem in an hour, or whatever his/her minimum is.

Before I proceed, please let me know if you'll answer more questions and check more settings.

Also, feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to call you on the phone, for that matter. I'm sane and harmless.

(D'oh! I posted a screenshot of JC's display options, but you couldn't see it--right???)

Rita, I think that something may have gotten unchecked in Tools/Options/Content on Clint's version of Firefox. Perhaps Load Images Automatically?

I unchecked it, and that didn't work except there were a whole lot of instructions at the end of each port.

So I checked it again and - VOILA!

Them pretty pictures are there.

The internet will drive you nuts.

If you decide to uncheck the box and allow images from only certain sites, do this:

In other words, you can block/allow images on a site-by-site basis if you wish to. You don't need to keep the box checked. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
