Weird, over-stretched list. Bagpipes don't get the love they deserve, though.

Musical instruments can't be pretentious, just the people who play them (and the morons who write about it).

And I'm with Brian - more bagpipe.

Lead singers in most white rock groups would be my number one.

Those were my thoughts, even before I read that "pretentious" list.

The list is stupid, but I would have to agree about Metheny's Pikasso guitar.

Well, if grand pianos are "pretentious," then...

is really pretentious.

And shame on you, Squaredancecalling Steve, for denigrating the noble nose flute.

Bill -- that's the first time I've ever heard the noseflute called noble. I've mostly heard it called a lot worse.

Only if your mouth is already busy with two or three instruments, like Rahsaan, could one justify sticking an wind instrument in one's nose.

Only yolking anyhow, but on the pretension scale I'd say the nose flute is roughly equal to the kazoo, usually annoying but certainly unpretentious.

Again, maybe not the instrument but the person playing it...
And didn't one of the other guys in the Flecktones tour once with a triple neck bass that was circular body with the necks coming out like spokes? I remember a pic of something like that, but can't find one.

Nothing, far as I can tell, although it seems you have to be bald to play one.

Sorry, but I can't get with the concept of this thread.

Pretentious musicians? Yes . . . plenty of them!

Pretentious musical instruments? I'm at a loss.

I have no idea. Unless you're an Australian aborigine though, use of a bullroarer is de facto pretentious. He doesn't look as though he fits that description.

What, you never met a china cymbal that thought it was just a little too cool?
