What the hell am I doing on Facebook?
Darned if I know. But my colleagues and I decided we needed to learn more about this social networking thing the young'ns are into these days, so we all opened Facebook accounts. Interesting the people you find out there. Even found JazzCorner.
So, are you on Facebook? And will you be my friend?

I'm on Facebook. It's been a couple of months now. I'm not an intensive user but I like to update my status.
I'll be glad to be your friend, but I couldn't find a likely "Gentle Giant." You can look me up.

After I found all the elementary school friends I could handle, I now, mostly, use it for the wonderfully addictive Scrabulous game (your turn, Tom... I got a killer Bingo I'm dying to lay down!) and passing around info on upcoming shows. Also, I get turned onto music, political groups, causes, etc. and it's fun to see, who knows whom. Just don't accept applications, unless they're really useful to you.
GG, feel free to send me a friend's request. My last name is Zafir.

heh, you expect me to let you get away with saying that I "drain" any part of you? That's either wishful thinking on your part, or you've been watching your Brokeback Mountain "director's cut" DVD too much, my friend.

Never.
We had a girl helping me out some last week. She pulled up hers for Bronwyn to see and she must have had every kid in her school, never mind her grade, on hers.

There once was a man named Scott Dolan
Who always loved to go bowlin'
To ensure he would win
He'd knock down every pin
And his opponent, whose lip was swollen

I was on myspace but I deleted the page. Seems an old high school bud that my son's mom is friends with told her about it.
She wanted the pics of my son and I and of my son removed due to her fear of child molesters. So I deleted the page. I think I was able to save my url though.
I've never been a firm hand shaker but the guy who helped make a mountain out of a molehill gets a death grip everytime I see him.
Actually he wised up and avoids me like a plague. The evil eye is good enough now and maybe better since he probably nearly pisses his pants...

Every so often, the Internet lives up to the hype. Last night, messing around on Facebook, I tried to think of people in my life I hadn't seen nor heard from in many, many years. I decided to search for the guy who gave me my six drum lessons in 1979-1980 (the extent of my formal training), when I was 16-17. I typed his name and of course several people with the same name came up, but there was one guy who seemed to have the same gentle eyes and smile I remembered. So I shot him a note to see if he was the guy, and sure enough it was. He had been working in a photo lab with my mom, and it was his idea that she get me a drum set for Hanukkah and he would give me lessons to help fund some demo recordings (I still have his tape, which is wonderful). He asked about her and I had to tell him that she died in 1999, but she would be excited to know that I'd found my long-lost drum teacher after all these years.
And now he's a friend.

I've always been a little guarded about sites such as MySpace, Facebook and the like. It would appear that I may have good reason for those feelings and some company, as well.
I'm not trying to create fear, just offering some insights, hopefully.
How Sticky Is Membership on Facebook? Just Try Breaking Free

Are you a member of Facebook.com? You may have a lifetime contract.
Some users have discovered that it is nearly impossible to remove themselves entirely from Facebook, setting off a fresh round of concern over the popular social network’s use of personal data.
While the Web site offers users the option to deactivate their accounts, Facebook servers keep copies of the information in those accounts indefinitely. Indeed, many users who have contacted Facebook to request that their accounts be deleted have not succeeded in erasing their records from the network.
“It’s like the Hotel California,” said Nipon Das, 34, a director at a biotechnology consulting firm in Manhattan, who tried unsuccessfully to delete his account this fall. “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Great local jazz bassist Bruce Gertz just asked me to be his friend. I pointed him to the JC Facebook group and the website, but y'all should know him and befriend him as he's a helluva musician and bandleader.
