I KNEW that wasn't a suicide.
Anyway, to answer the question, via wikipedia...
In January of 2005, D'Angelo was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty to the DUI and marijuana charge and, on April 13, was given a fine and suspended sentence and his driver's license was revoked. On September 12, he received a three-year suspended sentence on the cocaine possession charge.
On September 19, 2005, just a week after being sentenced for cocaine possession, D'Angelo was critically injured in Powhatan County, Virginia when the SUV he was riding in hit a fence, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
A follow-up to the Voodoo album has yet to be released; however, in recent months, D'Angelo is said to be hard at work on a third album, tentatively titled James River.[1] After a long period of inactivity, D'Angelo has made guest appearances on several albums, including releases by J Dilla, Common [2], Red Hot & Riot and The RH Factor.
In August of 2006, D'Angelo is confirmed to have exited a rehabilitation stint on the island of Antigua and has begun collaborations with Common and Q-Tip. He also entered discussions with Jermaine Dupri on how to market what appears to be a forthcoming LP, though the official news of a release has not been made public yet. [3] Although music for his own album has yet to materialize, D'Angelo was featured on the song "Imagine", by Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, from his album Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, released on November 21, 2006.
On April 17, 2007 a new song called "Really Love" was leaked on Triple J Radio in Australia by ?uestlove[2] D'Angelo also had a guest appearance on Common's most recent album, Finding Forever on the track, "So Far to Go".
On August 10, 2007 D'Angelo was sent to court on charges, relating to a car accident that occurred on September 19, 2005. These charges included reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. The singer plead guilty to these charges and was ordered to pay a $1,250 fine, in addition to forfeiting his license for 15 months. He also received a nine-month suspended jail sentence. After the proceedings, the artist confirmed that new music is "in the works" although the album remains untitled.

That's a great scene, when McNulty attempts to duplicate the way Angelo "hanged" himself on the doorknob.
Although not as great as Jimmy and Bunk finding the bullet...

This thread reminded me to get D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" and "Voodoo"; I was listening to them last night and they are sweet stuff.

Devil's Pie is a great groove track.
Love the bass line on that one, and it might be the best lyrical writing he did. Really good, socio-political lyrics without being too preachy.
All in line ... all in line ...
Got it on now.
Cheers,
Rob

I can't say why exactly, but my favorite D'Angelo track is "One Mo' Gin"
Funky, silky, spooky. The lust and the hurt feelings come right through.
Those wraith-like harmonies ... never heard a sound quite like it.
It sounds like something I heard in the 70s, but I've never been quite able to place it. On some level, the changes in the chorus remind me of Donny Hathaway, but Donny never had a production sound like this, though. Definately not a Hathaway record. "One Mo' Gin" could fit Donny's voice, I think.
If it's not clear already, I like "Voodoo" more than "Brown Sugar" ... Both albums are flawed, though. It feels like he was still on the path, heading somewhere. Listening to them reminds me of how much he brought to the table and how much the game has passed him by ... the off-kilter funk beats, the sparse arrangments, were everywhere in the neo-soul game back then, but now everyone's in full production mode, cramming every sound into every space in R&B. I'd hate to see him go the way of another favorite mine, Terence Trent D'Arby, and only have his albums released on a website where nobody will hear them.
A brilliant talent ... he is/was.
Cheers,
Rob

Yesterday I was watching a DVD-r with a concert of DŽAngelo from Montreux Jazz Festival recorded in 2000. Wow!!! It was soooo good! I loved every second of it. Marvelous band and great backup singers. DŽAngelo and the whole band is soo inspired. They all seem too have so much fun on the stage and Questlove must be the coolest drummer and bandleader in the world.
Please DŽAngelo come back!!!!!!
