BARNEY WILEN

A young French talented tenor sax player became a rising star mid 1950s in the Parisian jazz scene: Barney Wilen. Fifty years ago he made a record dedicated to Django Reinhardt and Charles Trenet titled Jazz sur Seine

Barney Wilen

...not to mention his albums (one studio, one live) with Miles Davis and the hip lp he did in tribute to a dead racer with racing cars providing the backdrop to his solos (long before Kraftwerk's Autobahn)

"Jazz Sur Seine" is definitely one of Barney's good ones. I have a lot of Barney's discs, including many of his very-hard-to-find IDA discs. If I were to pick a favorite, it would probably be "Passione" (Venus) with some nice trumpet work by Enrico Rava. But I'm also partial to "Le Ca: New York Romance" (Venus & Sunnyside) because of the great rhythm section of Kenny Barron, Ira Coleman and Lewis Nash.

One of Barney's fans created a website in his memory. It has a complete discography. There are a few titles in there that I've been trying to find for a few years, including "Paris Moods" with some early work by Jacky Terrasson.

I enjoyed Barney Wilen playing since the first time I heard him.
It is interesting to note that on "Que Reste-t-il de nos anours", from Jazz sur Seine, after Percy Heath intro Milt Jackson start improvising followed by Wilen and its beautiful theme only appears in the end of the track.

In the first volume of "Barney", recorded live with a great quintet (Kenny Dorham, Wilen, Duke Jordan, Rovere and Daniel Humair) the fantastic Duke Jordan improvisition on Lady Bird full with incredible well developed ideas and a lot of swing must surprise many people. IMHO Jordan was vastly underrated and a track llike that show how great he was.
