Anyone here use Thunderbird?
No, I'm not talking about the cheap ass "wine", I'm talking about the e-mail client that Mozilla has.
I'm not a huge fan of Firefox, but it certainly works better than IE (I use Opera mainly). But, now Outlook Express is starting to give me problems. Or should I say it and Zone Alarm are battling to the death. And in the meantime, I'm having to shut down Zone Alarm in order to check my fucking e-mail. A dangerous practice I don't much care for.
So, I'm thinking about giving Thunderbird a try. Any other e-mail client suggestions?

Been using it at home and work for about a year. Basically like it. Ditched Outlook Express years ago. Used The Bat for a few years, but found it a little too unstable.
I'm a longtime Opera user, too.

Yeah, I'm thinking of checking out their M2 Mail Client. Have you ever tried it? I believe it's fairly new.

I may look at other firewalls as well. I've been reading a lot of bad reviews about the latest free version of ZA. Maybe I'll have to buy a nice firewall. It's the only freebie in my security setup at this point.

I've fooled around with it, but prefer a standalone e-mail client. No real reason, it's just how I've always done it.
So far with T-bird, I've never had my message base corrupted, not even once. This is a big deal at work. Fairly sophisticated filtering capabilities. It also has some pretty useful add-ons, including a backup utility that syncs everything, and a little utility that makes it hard to stupidly hit "reply-to-all" or accidently send something to the wrong person with a similar name or address. This has saved me mucho embarrassment.
It's updated regularly, has good online support, and is easy to set up.
Oh, and on the firewall, I switched to AVG w/ antivirus from ZA, at home. ZA was really giving me trouble. So far, so good.

AVG has a firewall now? I used to use their antivirus many moons ago until it started going downhill. Now I strictly use Spy Sweeper w/antivirus. Though I've heard AVG has really gotten their shit together the last couple of years.
I'll definitely check out the AVG firewall, thanks for the tip.

I've used Thunderbird for over two years and love it! Their latest version (2.0.0.9) came with some very nice upgrades, too.
It's a no-brainer, Scott.

Townes knew all about way back when.....
Among the strangest things I ever heard
Was when a friend of mine said man, let’s get some thunderbird
I said what’s that? he just started to grin
Slobbered on his shirt, his eyes got dim
He said you got fifty-nine cents?
I said yeah, I got a dollar, but don’t be a smart-aleck
I ain’t gonna spend it on no indian relic
And he said thunderbird’s not an old indian trinket,
It’s a wine, man, you take it home and drink it.
I said it sure don’t sound like wine to me
And he said he’d bet me the change from my dollar
We hustled on down to the nearest u-tate-um
The guy wanted my id, I whipped her out and showed him
He got a green bottle from the freezing vault
My friend started doing backward somersaults
Through the cottage cheese
Took it back to his house, started drinkin’
Pretty soon I set in to thinkin’
Man, this thunderbird tastes yummy, yummy, yummy
And I know it’s doing good things to my tummy, tum..., t...
It’s so you reason when your on that crap
Got a few more bottles, chugged them down
I pulled myself up off the ground
Decided I go see my dearest sweet wife
Who met me at the door with a carving knife
Said get them damn grape peel from between your teeth.
I could see we’re gonna have a little misunderstanding
I said dear, I better get in touch with you later
She said forget it, man, you’re never touchin’ me again!
Now I’ve seen the light and heard the word
And I’m staying away from that ol’ dirty thunderbird
A message come from heaven radiant, and fine,
All I drink now is communion wine
Six days a week

Yeah, I kinda figured as much. I've just never had any problems with Outlook before so I never looked into alternative clients. I'm going to download it this weekend and fool with it a bit.

There's really not much you'll need to fool with, Scott. Download it, set up the protocol with your ISP and you're pretty much done — except for setting up some spam filters.

Scott, if you never get any spam ...
a) You're simply one lucky mofo
b) Your ISP filters it for you, or
c) You have anti-spam software in place
Our ISP provides SpamGuard protection, but we still need to go in and purge what they've blocked from time-to-time. I'm headed there to do just than now.

a) I guess I must be.
b) I have never received a single piece of spam no matter the ISP. Even when I was on Frewwweb back in the good ole days.
c) I have, and never have had, any antispam software on any of my machines. Unless Outlook Express has one built in that I am not aware of.
I realize you still don't believe me, but it's all 100% true. Hell, now that I have video capabilities on my new camera I can document it for you as proof.

It's not that I don't believe you, it's that it seems so utterly improbable, bordering on preposterous.
You're the only person I've ever heard state that they have "never received a single piece of spam."
Hell, even my sweet 87 year old mother-in-law who never would even consider visiting a porn site gets penis enlargement inquiries.

I used to use T-Bird but switched to gmail which has a much better spam filter.

Shall I make a comp video and put it online as proof?
I don't know what else to tell you. My buddy that got me into computing never gets spam either.
But let me make it even more preposterous. I don't even get it in my quarantine folder at work. Though almost everyone else in the building does. I have no idea why, I'm just a fucking freak of internetdom I guess.

Can't access it here at work. Do they have a stand alone firewall? I don't need another anti-virus.

Scott, I've been using Thunderbird for about a year and I like it. Outlook Express was never a major problem for me, but I like Thunderbird better. It runs a bit lighter and it doesn't try to embed itself into all my other applications and every aspect of my OS the way Outlook Express did.

Does Thunderbird have an easy way to export your contacts? That's one of the major weaknesses of Outlook.

I use G-mail in addition to regular POP mail. Have to agree that G-mail's spam filtering is amazing.

Agreed. Once you find out how to do it, it's easy. But it shouldn't be something you have to fucking look up online just to find out. Guess that was their way of discouraging you from using alternative clients.

Oh, and I've used Thunderbird (the browser) for several years both at home and in my business. Wouldn't use that crappy Outlook if you paid me.
