Steve Lacy trio/quartet/sextet drummers: Oliver Johnson or John Betsch

While both are fantastic drummers, fans tend to have a preference.

Which drummer do you prefer?

I haven't delved into too much Lacy these days, but I would say for the sextets, Johnson and for the trio, Betsch.

I'm not familiar with Oliver Johnson but certainly appreciate the considerable talents of John Betsch, who was the drummer for many sessions with my man, Jim Pepper.

I like 'em both, but I think I'd have to go with Betsch.

Sam Woodyard's guest spot with Lacy was amazing (a tune on one of the Novus albums--maybe The Door?).

The quartet setting I think could have been either one.
It seems Potts and Lacy usually controlled the music.

I think that both were fantastic as well. Hard to choose. I never saw Johnson perform live. John Betsch could often go way above the call for duty on stage and helped bring a tremendous spark to the music. On the other hand, I do prefer the material and approach to the music a bit more in Oliver Johnson's days and he too helped bring life to it. So, I'll give one six and one a half dozen.

Both great players. Johnson was a bit looser, wasn't he? A bit more of a free player, I think. Lacy had great taste in drummers.
