Can't say it is diffinitive, but how it was 'handed off' to me

Sorry to admit I mispronounced the great bassist Mark Helias' name this morning.
Jane Ira Bloom kindly and gently corrected me

So how is it pronounced? I'd say Hell-LIE-us.

I'd have thought HE-lee-us (like helium with an "s" instead of the "m").

Tom, He-lie-us is how we all pronounce it here, but it's actually a French name, non? Shouldn't it actually be something like Hell-ee-ahs?

Paul Motian pronounces his name mo-shun, but that doesn't make it right, either?

I think Dennis is probably right, but I've usually heard it as 4 syllables: Moan-Toe-Lee-You, with the emphasis on Lee.

I believe he threw in the towel on that one.
There are air checks of the Evans trio where Symphony Sid actually pronounces his name "right" which is pretty amazing considering his track record.

Did I ever tell you I went by Jim for years for the same reason? It's still a pain in the ass.
