New purchase. Caught this band on Leno a couple of weeks ago and find their energy infectious.

Didn't like this album much back in the day, but now find it quite good.
Pretty much the exact opposite reaction I have to the two albums that preceded it.

I thought Tusk was lightyears better than Rumors.
Though I could live happily without either since I don't care much for the Mac.
The title track for Tusk is the best thing they ever did.

I was only listen to Gentle Giant´s selftitled debutalbum. It´s a very enjoyable recording.
Now I listen to their second album (my favorite):

Not a slight against my very good friend out Boston way, but I still don't know how people stomach that slow, churning nonsense.

"Terror fills my soul" is, of course, a line from a song on the first album, "Alucard" (read it backwards).
"Slow, churning" isn't GG, Scott. While most progrock is pretty midtempo, Giant could fire up the burners. Whereas other prog groups had psychedelic origins, Giant's roots were in the British soul/pop group Simon Dupree and the Big Sound.
Which is not to say you'd like it, or ought to try it out, but if you're going to criticize it, at least call it pretentious.
Laz, interesting that ATT is your favorite Giant. I've often played "Pantagruel's Nativity" to newbies as a one-song model of the group's musical range.

It's like engine sludge set to music.
Though I do have to be fair and say I've never heard any GG.

"On Reflection," "Free Hand" or "Peel the Paint" would change your view, I would think.

Well, if someone could e-mail one or two of those to me, we'll see. But, I out grew prog rock about the same time I started putting shoe strings back in my shoes.

I can tell its pretentious just by the fact that they're spelling Dracula backwards.

"Alucard" predates the group. I don't think Stoker used it in the novel, but it was used in some of the Bela Lugosi and other films.

Ian does it as good as anyone. Still does, in fact. His newest, Shrunken Heads, is a winner.
With Mick Ronson.

Al Kooper, too. Two cats who deserve to be adoringly carried into the R&R Hall of Fame but may only see the inside with a visitor's pass.
