A wonderful album, a great album. I'd rank this as among the very best Blue Notes from the 1950s. I really think Miles steals the show, but Cannonball is in great form too. And don't neglect the work by Hank Jones (curiously, I'm more familiar with his more recent work, such as Lovano), Sam Jones, and Art Blakey (rather more subdued than usual).

RVG Remaster version helps one to hear Hank Jones' contribution better...

I find Rudy's piano recordings dont measure up to what he made of brass and reed, even on the remasters. Could have been the mikes of that time, I dont know
A bit better sounding is Bill Evans on "Know what I mean" and a terrible example of RVG is Horace Silver's Six Pieces or even worse Red Garland's Soul Junction

It was really a Miles-led date, but released under Canonball's name for contractual reasons.

This is one of may favorite jazz records period. I used to host a jazz program on radio and if I played anything from this I could never resist playing a second track. It sounds glorious and there is a really satisfying balance about it. Everything's in the right place or something (else).

I always thought that Cannonball should have recorded more for Blue Note. He definitely had that bluesy, rootsy approach. I have discovered that at least one early record features Horace Silver, which is completely appropriate.
