Lawmaker: Gays worse than terrorists
To believe what Oklahoma's Rep. Kern said, you really have to hear her words for yourself
March 11, 2008 11:25AM
Chris Johnson
Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern (R) got herself into very hot water -- and into the national spotlight -- when disturbing comments she made during a GOP gathering were posted by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund to YouTube. During her tirade, she called homosexuality "the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam":
In response to her statements, HRC sent a letter on Monday to Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, Speaker of the House Chris Benge and Senate President Pro-Tempore Mike Morgan demanding that they publicly condemn her remarks. Here is the full text of the letter:
__________________ March 10, 2008
Governor Brad Henry
State Capitol Building, Rm. 212
2300 N. Lincoln Blvd.
Oklahoma City, OK 73105
Dear Governor Henry:
As head of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) civil rights organization with over 700,000 members and supporters across the country, I am writing to draw your attention to the deeply troubling remarks of Oklahoma Representative Sally Kern stating that homosexuality is a bigger threat to our nation than terrorism.
We hope you will join the Human Rights Campaign, and the GLBT community of Oklahoma in condemning these remarks.
Mr. Governor, words matter. As an elected official, Representative Kern’s words and behavior set an example for the public and equating sexual orientation with terrorism serves only to further divide us and endanger our fellow citizens – some of whom she certainly represents in her elected capacity.
Representative Kern’s statements are especially troubling given the recent spate of hate violence against gay and transgender youth. Last month in California, a 15 year old boy, Lawrence King, who suffered taunting and bullying by his classmates because of his sexual orientation and gender identity, was killed by one of those classmates – a 14 year old boy.
Unfortunately, hate violence in the United States is on the rise. The FBI’s most recent hate crimes report shows an increase in bias-motivated violence from the previous year. Hate crimes based on religion and sexual orientation are the second and third most prevalent, following only race in their frequency. Hate crimes are particularly virulent because they send the poisonous message that some Americans deserve to be victimized solely because of their race, ethnic background, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Comments such as Representative Kern’s only serve to fuel hate motivated violence towards the GLBT community. In fact, these statements are irresponsible and do a disservice to the people of Oklahoma and all Americans.
Mr. Governor, as the chief executive of the state of Oklahoma, you are charged with the safety and well being of all your citizens. We urge you, as their Governor, to take a stand against Representative Kern’s rhetoric and publicly condemn these hate-filled remarks.
Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese
President
_____________
Not only has Rep. Kern refused to to repudiate her bizarre statements, she is standing by them. And, she's lashing out at those of us who are challenging her warped view. One thing is for sure, Rep. Kern does recognize one important truth: Radicals who actively work to stop GLBT civil rights will have to account for their actions at the ballot box and we will actively use our influence to make a difference in legislatures across the country: "I said nothing that was not true, I said nothing out of hate and I don't believe my colleagues will censure me,” Kern said. "I was speaking about the homosexual activists who are aggressively funding pro-homosexual candidates against conservative Republicans. In 2006, they targeted conservatives across the nation, mostly at the state and local levels. They took out 50 of them.”

That is crazy. Islam is far and away the biggest threat to our nation.

I am looking for the tongue in cheek here. Strange to say something so obvious.
If you mean this as a serious statement, might I remind you that homosexuality is not a threat to the nation AT ALL. Not any more, at least, than being a woman, or black, or whatever...

Well, there is the problem of the prevalence of the musty odor of penetrated rectum. But I'm willing to concede your point that homos constitute no threat to the Republic, or a small one that is probably disconnected from their proclivity to bugger. It's the Muslims who need to be destroyed. However, look at that thread title: Lawmaker: Gays worse than terrorists. That right there is the pot calling the kettle a terrorist/pervert.

Tell us more about this smell Monte. You sound pretty familiar with this subject.
FWIW, not all gay men perform anal sex. And certainly the trend is not popular with lesbians. Actually I know plenty frat boys at my school who talk about fucking girls that way.
This "lawmaker" is probably more of a threat, especially if people of her belief are getting together in large groups.

I shall! "The musty odor of penetrated rectum" is my favorite phrase from the literary treasure trove that is William Burrough's Naked Lunch.

I have never been much of a fan of Burroughs. But I did see the movie. I remember the talking rectum typewriter. The image sort of sticks with ya.

Ellen DeGeneres attempted to reach this neanderthal (Sally Kern, not Monte Smith) by phone from her show today, but guess what — her voicemail box was full!

Monte does this little Fascist dance just to amuse us all. And let's face it, when he rings the bell, many of us (me included) start salivating on cue. And once in a while his facade slips--like when he quotes Burroughs.
Give us hell, Monte. We deserve it.
Besides, there are so many Biggest Threats these days, it's hard to know where to begin. But I'll begin with Tim Russert, and Jay Rockefeller, and Antonin Scalia. Bush and Cheney, blah-blah-blah. It's the guys on the Inside you got to worry about these days.

They do have more effective ways of keeping gays closeted in Islamic countries.

The reverse, them hating the West enough to kill us of course is totally unreasonable.
It makes little sense.

Absolutely, rather than a cause for hate, their treatment of gays is something many here might find admirable. Islamists also really know how to handle women, don't they?

Eddie Izzard is not gay - he's a transvestite. He explained it in one of his stand-up acts. So I suppose you don't need to call your lawyer just yet.

No, but Muslims are sure they know what's best, whatever the Koran says.
I'm not sure why you brought up the Tucker execution. Did you skip your meds today, Patricia? You seem rather touchy.

I didn't realize that was implied in my statement, but it seems like it's something you want to comment on, regardless. I apologize if I've disrespected you in any way, but I treat the female posters here equally to the males. Both start with a default level of respect, and then get upgraded or downgraded based on their observed behavior, without regard to gender. Beyond a basic level, respect has to be earned, it's not an entitlement.
As far as Islam goes, they defend their practices by arguing they are protecting women, and actually respect them more than Western society does, as long as they're not caught flirting. Sure, then they can be stoned, but those are the rules that everyone's supposed to know and live by in their society. Where you saw an implication of greater respect, many Muslims would argue quite the opposite.
Which do you prefer, respect that has to be earned, or respect that means great restrictions on freedom?

Naw, it was Kim Campbell. Heir to the Campbell Soup fortune. In the early 1950s, Campbell's Tomato Soup was considered "red" by many in the press, and Kim Campbell appeared before many Congressional hearings denying that his company secretly supported Moscow, through a series of overlapping corporate boards, etc.
