Brad Mehldau Trio: Live

Just got it today.

Perhaps my favorite trio of this era.

Too bad it comes three years after their last disc.

And by the way, where is Phil G these days?

Cheers,

Rob

I'm glad to hear Phil's working.

Thanks

I too am fan of Brad Mehldau. I will have to put it a wishlist because I have bought too much music lately. Peace and happy listening.

I've been listening to this in my car while stuck on the DC beltway going to and from work. I like it a lot although the Oasis tune that opens it threw me off for a second. It's definately passed the commute test.

I finally bought it a couple of weeks ago, and I really like it. Those guys are my favorite piano trio. Peace and good will.

I really love Black Hole Sun on this one. Perhaps it drags occasionally here and there, but damn! the musical imagination. I played this one and Wonderwall for a couple of non-jazz friends as a challenge of sorts. They were both familiar with the originals but it was amazing how displacing them from the guitar bass drums, rock instrumentation really fazes the 'straights'!

Planning on coming back to all my Mehldau stuff - and I have most of it, including the early New York-Barcelona Crossing with Perico Sambeat - and listening to it sequentially, but as I've heard the Trio Live album least of all, I'm going to give it a sneaky extra 'pre listen'.
I'm surprised that it doesn't seem to have made many waves here in JC, but I get the feeling that there aren't too many Brad fans here at JC anyway...

I preferred to keep silent in light of your appraisal of Wonderwall and Black Hole Sun
Don't like the album at all, reminds me of E.S.T. (let's bring jazz to the pop charts )
Art of Trio is as far as I want to go

That's an interesting, and on one level an entirely justified take on the album Latty, but I can't help feeling that there is more to it than that. What do you think of his other covers of pop/rock tunes? I.e. Paranoid Android (and he does a monster version of this on the solo in Tokyo album), Everything in its Right Place (another great 'head track, and a great version IMO. Basically I'm saying it's about the pretty melodies, and using them as a springboard for something more complex hopefully.
I'm not a huge fan of E.S.T. - friends had played some stuff for me, and I've said 'Nice', but never had the burning urge to go out and pick it up myself, or even request a copy from them. But old Brad has a long track record in doin'/reworkin' the pop thang.
FWIW I think Black Hole Sun in particular works very well, and there's some really fine trio playing overall, that ranks up there in his oeuvre. I urge you, nay implore you tearfully to reconsider Latty!
Oh, and ditto as regards Testament, which I have come to see as another Great Jarrett, and one to be treasured in the days that are to come.

No chance for Mehldau: gave it back already a while ago. Probably too much of the prettiness. Like I said: E.S.T. (really hate'em and could not believe when they made it to the cover of Downbeat)

As for Testament: I#m getting closer to it bit by bit, have it on mp3
