Burrell is so unsung. He has thrilled me since I heard High Won, High Two in college (Pharoah Sanders on tambourine).

I agree, Jesse.

I feel very privileged to have been in the same space with Dave while at Berklee, sharing the dormitory at 275 Newbury, and hearing the beginnings of his substantial offerings, firsthand.

Likewise, likewise. I've been listening to quite a bit of David Stackenas recently and I was turned on to this by Richard Pinnell's blog. Do you have any other Stackenas recommendations? Do you know if the Frontroom Ensemble has ever recorded? It's an interesting line-up.

David will, in fact, be playing live tomorrow night (w/ bass player Johan Berthling and French-Vietnamese percussionist Lê Quan Ninh) here in Stockholm, but, if you can't join me for that...

- I like his solo on Häpna - The Guitar - quite a lot. Very Baileyish, but not only.
- If you want to hear DS in a busier, jazzier group context, try the 1994 disc SURD "Live at Glenn Miller Café" on Ayler.
- On Atavistic, there's "Blues" w/ Mats Gustafsson, a very special, deconstructionist take on blues. Fun too.
- And you really need to listen to Boots Brown (on Slottet), where DS adds sweet & subtle discord to what could perhaps be described as Swedish improv meets West Coast cool jazz. Wonderful group sound, including Mats Gustafsson in a pleasantly subdued mode. One of my favourites of 2007.

Some excerpts:
http://www.myspace.com/stackenas
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=76552858

Frontroom Ensemble do perform live occasionally (saw them w/ Keith Rowe some time ago). No recording yet though, AFAIK.

And thanks for the link. Nice writing.

Heartily second these three.
The Boots Brown is very unusual yet enjoyeable Mats & fantastic Stackenäs.
Have to investigate the duos with M. Küchen.
