A Worthy Cause
Now, here's an activist campaign I can get behind:
Jeff Alworth, a Portland, Ore., beer blogger, university researcher and a founder of the Honest Pint Project, has been testing suspected short-pouring bars, in some cases measuring his beer-glass capacity by the men’s room sink. His group collected more than 400 names in two weeks for an online petition urging state regulators to enforce a 16-ounce rule. And at one point, he was posting the names of bars that didn’t measure up on his Web site. But in response to complaints, he now has taken to listing the names of establishments serving full pints in bigger glasses.

Now, this is a cause the "hard-working WHITE voters" can get behind.
Too bad it didn't come up at Ms. Clinton's sojourn with the "real" people.
Maybe it would have made all the difference.

This is a transclass, transrace issue, right here, dammit. A pint is 16 ounces. We can't let them get away with this shit.
A bar divided against itself cannot stand.

When we opened the restaurant a few years ago, I found out the some of the dirty secrets of the industry. A lot of places use 14 ounce sleeves that look just like 16's. They have heavier bottoms and people can't tell the difference. We charged a few cents more, but poured honest 16 and 20 ounce pints. Some people would complain that we were over-priced. In reality, I had to explain that we were cheaper, because we served better, local brew, with proper head, maybe a half inch over the rim, in 16 ounce sleeves and 20 ounce British pint glasses with a handle. But people had this idea of a 5 dollar pint, regardless of size and quality.

Incredible. Not unbelievable, though. The coffee industry back early 80s managed to switch over to 12 ounces in the same size cans that once held 16.

Maybe he'll expand his crusade to nail those places which serve a 6 oz. glass of wine which retails for 10 bucks and charge $12 for it.

I'm still a little put off about the men's room sink reference, but I applaud the effort.

I pay $3.75 for a 12 oz. "pint" at my local, which comes out to $5 a pint. It was $3.25 just a few months ago...I blame the price increase on all the idiots who want to drink super-hopped beers, and all the idiots who make them.

You guys have already been taken. A pint in the UK is 568ml. A pint in the US is 473ml. So much for self-evident and inalienable rights.

The larger, British pint is called an "imperial pint." And it could be ours. But nooooo. Everyone is against imperialism. Imperialism is "bad." Fuckers!

In the traditional shaker pint glass used in the majority of bars in the Boston area, 16 ounces is right to the rim (English style of serving). Most places serve tap beer with about an inch of head. That 1 inch of beer in this type of glass is at least 4 ounces of beer. I use 16 ounce shaker beer glasses at home and a 12 ounce bottled beer comes up to about 3/4's of an inch from the top.
I have pointed this out to some bartenders. A lot of them understand. A couple of times (usually when I'm paying $8 a pint), I have asked for a top off so I get the full pint that I paid for. I am very careful when and where I do this. I only do it where I can see the bartender and the tap. The bartenders get extremely pissed when anyone does this and I have been told by a number of former bar workers that they spit in the glass of people who complain about their pour.
BTW, in Germany, it is illegal to under-serve beer. Their glasses have very visible markings showing the amount of beer in the glass. They have sting operations where the town sends a guy around to order beer. If he gets shorted, he writes out a violation right on the spot. It's a pretty hefty fine. I wish they would do that in my area.

The owner of the bar likes a large head.

That's why I like places that use the Imperial pint glass.
If they give you too much head in a regular pint glass, shove it back and tell them to put a tie on it.
I got that from a cat who bartended in Belfast. He said customers demanded their pints with no head whatsoever.

Misleading packaging is retail norm. Hell, just as with pints, they do it with yogurt, the old standard being 750ml, and many recent packages with quite similar look at 650ml. Asking for state regulation is kinda scary though. Pull-your-consumer-head-out-of-your-ass advocacy, that's the way to go.
