Coldplay's Viva la Vida

The world's "biggest band" is back with its fourth entry.

Good record. Damn good record, in fact.

Makes up for the near-disaster that's "X&Y"!

Hey, sometimes a man's got to have a little taffy between his Brotzmann blitzkriegs.

Don't own it yet, but I've heard it for free online at iheartmusic.com, which is cool if you can stand all the "music on demand" annoucements.

Here a little teaser .................

Coldplay’s fourth studio album, “Viva La Vida,” is out. You can be forgiven for thinking it’s been out for a while. The title track has been available online as a download–and Apple has made the “Viva La Vida” single seemingly ubiquitous by featuring it in an iTunes ad.

That single aside, how have Chris Martin and company done with the album? Though it arrives in the U.S. today, it is already selling briskly in the U.K. Critics are offering up some mixed responses to the band’s efforts to become more experimental and thwart the perennial accusations of blandness. Meanwhile, there’s a sour note for the release: Coldplay (pictured above) is fending off accusations of plagiarism by Brooklyn band Creaky Boards. Coldplay denies the charge.

Here’s a sampling of “Viva La Vida” reviews:

J. Freedom du Lac in the Washington Post: The album is “Coldplay’s most compelling and invigorating album by a wide margin, even if it’s hardly avant-garde. (It’s still a Coldplay album, after all.)” [Washington Post]

Newsday: “The spareness of ‘Viva La Vida’s’ musical backdrop… was supposed to hail the birth of a new, more experimental band. However, those working orders arrive and depart quickly - sometimes in the middle of a song, leading to uneven pairings like the familiar, if bland, “Yes” with the thrilling, early-U2ish “Chinese Sleep Chant”….” [Newsday]

Rolling Stone: “…while the experimentation makes this their most musically interesting album to date, its political messages are too vague to be heard amid its outsize hooks.” [Rolling Stone]

Dallas Morning News: “…the pretentiously titled ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’, isn’t notably better than the group’s previous three, though it’s not for a lack of trying.” [Dallas Morning News]

Entertainment Weekly: “…their fourth and best album” feels “emboldened at almost every turn.” [EW]

Yeah, they ain't Radiohead, but who cares?

A good song is a good song.

Cheers,

Rob

Saw a TV commercial for it last night. Still very rare, but I love when albums get TV advertising.

That commercial is ubiquitous and the song featured, from the 30 or so seconds you hear, one of the worst pieces of overwrought, rich baby, me-me-me pieces of crap I've ever heard. Happily, I've only been exposed to Coldplay twice, this and their appearance on SNL a couple years back--in each instance, I was left with a murderous feeling.

I always thought this was pretty odd - what about tv advertising wouldn't serve the album market (back when the album market was even more significant than today's)?

I'm blissfully unfamiliar with the commercial and the song that accompanies it.

I have no intention of listening to this album, but I do object to its abuse of the Delacroix image, further debasing a historically important painting into a kitsch backdrop. I can imagine kids later coming across it in some textbook and saying, 'Hey, that's that Coldplay cover'.

I always thought Coldplay sounded like everything that sucked about the '80s.

That TV commercial is quite sick-making in its Bono-esque gloryosity.

Why do I get the feeling your rating system is heavily flawed and based almost exclusively on your whim?

Whatever if you don't want A-plusses fine then don't renew your free subscription which expires at midnight. My unpaid ratings are naturally of a different character than the subscription service.

Then how can I get a taste of the premium service? I thought free trials were supposed to be the same as the full service, but only for a limited time.

I think you're actively scamming me here.

Did you read up to the point where it says all contracts must be paid in advance?

By the way, your post shows a genuine intellect. A true thinker. There's a good chance you are going to go somewhere in life. Maybe even Denver. Cool kid! Hang Ten! All right! Gimme Five! Glee club is for winners.

A+

It's starting to sound a little bit like you're not interested. You are free to check my credentials in any state except Georgia.

In your brochure it says you are "highly sought after". Though, not incorrect, you seemed to have left out some rather important details.

you're an SNL watcher, Brian?

As for Coldplay, there's a radio station here in the Twin Cities (called Cities '97, natch) that used to play them religiously (still do, for all I know). Sadly, my girlfriend was a big fan of both station & band so I heard them on a practically daily basis, a frequency on par w/ The Steve Miller Band's GREATEST HITS platter during my college years. The aural stimulus of either now results in a Pavlovian response to pull my hair out. Fortunately, most of it has grown back since my last encounter.
