NBA Offseason
Baron opts out.
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9307
>>in recent weeks the Warriors have been quirky, allowing their $9 million trade exception to expire and choosing not to make offers to several free agents.<<
That's because nothing special was available and because the team's holding on to its wallets until Monta and Beans are signed.
If the Warriors lose all three of these guys, I will continue to follow track and field as faithfully as I always have.

Celebrate the Tradition NEW YORK, July 1, 2008 -- The National Basketball Association has named United States Army Major General Ronald L. Johnson to the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Referee Operations, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner David Stern. General Johnson will be responsible for all aspects of the NBA’s officiating program, including recruiting, training and development, scheduling, data management and analysis, and work rules enforcement. He will report to Joel Litvin, NBA President, League and Basketball Operations.
The appointment of General Johnson to head the league’s officiating program formalizes the separation of the league's referee and basketball operations functions, as previously announced by the league. Stu Jackson will continue as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, responsible for all other domestic and international basketball matters, reporting to Litvin. General Johnson, a two-star General, recently retired from active duty as Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- the second highest ranking engineer in the Army -- after completing 32 years of military service as a combat engineer. As Commanding General of the Army Corps of Engineers, Gulf Region Division, from 2003 to 2004, he was responsible for overseeing $18 billion of reconstruction in Iraq. He also commanded the 130th Combat Engineer Brigade in Bosnia from 1996 to 1998. General Johnson is a 1976 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds several advanced degrees, including a Masters in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from Georgia Tech's School of Industrial Engineering and a Masters in Strategy from the Army's School of Advanced Military Studies.
“Ron's wealth of leadership and management experience, together with his engineering expertise in areas such as systems analysis, processes, and operations, make him an ideal candidate to lead our officiating program,” said Stern. “Our referees are the best in the world but they never stop striving to improve and Ron has made a career out of getting the very best out of people. We are fortunate to have someone of such extraordinary accomplishment joining our staff."
"As I leave the military and return to civilian life, I can't imagine a more interesting and challenging position," said Johnson. "Although I don't have a basketball background, other than as a lifelong fan, I am confident that my experience as an Army commander and engineer has equipped me to bring leadership and innovation to the NBA's exceptional officiating program." General Johnson was an Army War College Fellow at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and received executive leadership and national security training at Harvard University, Gallup University, George Washington University, the University of Virginia, and the Center for Creative Leadership. Johnson will relocate from Alexandria, Virginia to work in the NBA’s New York headquarters.

Baron's gone! Clippers offering $20 million a year for 5 years, and as much I love Baron he's not worth that much.
Agent Zero?

Now I'm hearing $65 million for 5 years.
Warriors have a lot of money to play with now. Could be an interesting period ahead. Or depressing.

I hear Agent Zero is re-signing with the Wizards. Elton Brand is supposedly taking a pay cut to stay and play with Baron. Maggette likely headed elsewhere from the Clips.

>>Warriors make offer to Elton Brand
Golden State reportedly offers the free-agent forward a larger deal than the Clippers, who have reached agreement with Baron Davis.
By Jonathan Abrams, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
10:32 AM PDT, July 2, 2008
In a move that could act as sweet revenge, the Golden State Warriors have offered free-agent Elton Brand a more lucrative, multiyear deal than the Clippers have proposed, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity because they are not allowed to speak about other free-agent dealings.
On Tuesday, the Clippers reached a verbal agreement to sign Warriors free-agent Baron Davis and were nearing a new deal with Brand.
Now, the Warriors have more salary cap space than the Clippers and have offered Brand a maximum contract, according to the sources.
Brand could not be reached for comment this morning.
No deal can be announced until July 9.<<

>>After Clippers swipe Davis, Warriors go after Brand
From Janny Hu.
(Story going online now).
The Clippers lured away the Warriors best player.
Now Golden State is hoping to return the favor.
Flush with cap space after Davis' sudden exit, the Warriors have offered free agent Elton Brand a five-year deal worth between $85 and $90 million, according to league source.
Brand, like Davis, opted out of the final year of his contract just before Monday's deadline, giving up a guaranteed $16.4 million for next season. At the time, Brand's agent, David Falk, told reporters that the move was designed to create some cap flexibility for the Clippers to add another top-line player.
The Clippers did just that by agreeing to terms with Davis on a five-year contract worth about $65 million Tuesday, though the deal cannot be finalized until July 9.
However, that means the most the Clippers can offer Brand is a five-year deal worth about $70 million due to salary-cap restrictions -- about $20 million less than the Warriors.
Brand, who had been close to re-signing with the Clippers, is expected to make a decision today.
Golden State had previously gone after Wizards guards Gilbert Arenas, offering him a maximum contract of five years at roughly $100 million on Monday night after learning that Davis would be opting out.
The Warriors are also meeting with representatives for Monta Ellis in Oakland today to begin negotiations on a new contract for the restricted free agent.<<

Brand's decision is still up in the air. LA Time's saying it's likely going to go the Warriors' way. ESPN's Stein has been saying the opposite, BUT the last three versions of his story have slipped slowly away from certainty and towards doubt. (Yes, I've been following it that closely.)
Beans is going to flourish if Brand's beside him.

Hearing now that Brand wants to stay, but wants the Clippers to match the W's offer. Part of the buzz around here is that if Brand takes a significantly lower offer from the Clippers, the deal would smell of collusion, and prompt an inquiry.
Have to say, I can't think of a franchise I'd rather be having a battle of wits with than the Clips.
Lots of talk about Hinrich coming here.

Hey now!
Well with Rose it does get a little crowded at the Bull's "point guard" position. Duhan seems to be gone to the Knicks I could live without Hinrich if that guarantees a place for Gordon.

Pietrus to Miami.
And Brand's going to Philly, says ESPN's Stein (whose been sure Brand's staying in LA up until now).

Brand to Philly.
And Turiaf and Maggette to the Oaktown.
And Baron with the Clippers in the cellar.

Turiaf is restricted, the Lakers have a week to decide if they want to match, and that's an awful cocky statement for a fan of a team with no PG (Ellis is not a PG, assuming they resign him).

Not sure what's cocky about it. That the Warriors will finish higher than the Clips? Seems like an easy call to me.
I assume the team will pick up Hinrich or somebody suitable. Monta's not now a point guard, but his learning curve is so steep I could see him becoming one.
And, wild as it seems, Baron may yet play here. He's not actually bound by his verbal agreement.

Thanks, Jeff. They've been on during my gigs. But WNBA is televising tomorrow's game, so I'll DVR it.
°°°°°
from today's Rocky Mountain News:
Center Marcus Camby said he was "blind-sided" by the trade.
After blocking 1,126 shots in six seasons with the Nuggets, center Marcus Camby took a few Wednesday.
Still trying to come to grips with his trade from Denver to the Los Angeles Clippers, Camby talked candidly about his disappointment in the hours after his abrupt departure.
"Blindsided, distraught, disrespected. All those adjectives. I definitely feel insulted," he said in a telephone interview with the Rocky Mountain News.
"When I first heard about the trade, I felt like I was the scapegoat after all our past first-round exits and failures and lack of defense. I felt it was them telling me that I was no longer wanted and I was the cause of everything that went wrong the last couple years on this team.
"I'm still in disbelief. I'm still in shock. I still can't believe this happened."
As part of a cost-cutting move, the Nuggets sent Camby and his $10 million salary-cap figure to the Clippers in exchange for the right to swap second-round picks in the 2010 draft...

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- Police say Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested after officers pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle while carrying two handguns and a shotgun in a guitar case.
Prince George's County police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Reedy says the Cleveland Cavaliers player was arrested about 10 p.m. Thursday.
Reedy says West was riding a Can-Am Spyder motorcycle north on the Capital Beltway in Upper Marlboro when he cut off an officer, who pulled him over.
Police say a handgun was found in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun in a guitar case strapped to his back.
West, 26, who lives in Brandywine, was charged with speeding and weapons counts. Reedy says West was released on his own recognizance early Friday.
