Rude clapping along at shows

There should be no audience clapping along at concerts unless it is requested by the performer(s).

I once went to hear a presentation of very rarely heard, ancient indigenous South American music at a NYC museum, and members of the audience took it upon themselves to start clapping along with the music. It's bad enough when this happens with North American or European folk music, but in this case it was completely inappropriate and distracting.

I think it would be more appropriate to specifically forbid clapping along with a sign or in introducing the music that should not be clapped to. People clap along to share their enjoyment.

Only those who can clap in time should be allowed to clap.

Bronwyn says musicians who play in Burlington should be forewarned not to invite clapping, as there is a section of the population that just doesn't feel when it's time to stop.

Obligatory clapping after "solos" and between pieces is bad enough. My pet peeve is premature clapping, while there's still unfinished business on stage and in the room.

Almost as rude and mindless as clapping at inappropriate times is not clapping at appropriate times.

What's the appropriate time? For jazz, I'd say it's at the end of a tune, unless it sucked, in which case I'm happy to not clap. I consider clapping at the end of solos optional, but would prefer it were not the norm. It's just rote. For classical I'd guess it's when the conductor or performers give the "it's okay to clap" body language.

I go to a lot of different kinds of concerts. I wish performers would stop saying things like "How y'all doin'?"

You've answered your own question(s), Pete. And, I agree with your standards.

I was thinking of jazz venues, mostly clubs when I posted my remarks.

I've been in situations where no one applauds a fine jazz tune at the end, mostly due to inattention. If tunes consistently sucked so badly that I didn't feel like clapping, I'd split.

I don't feel obliged to applaud every solo, but know what it feels like to be acknowledged when you're rewarded for something extra, so try to extend that outreach myself.

You know what I hate even worse than rude clapping? When a player or more typically a singer starts a song, then there's the applause of recognition, and then the singer steps out of the performance to say thank you, as if the accomplishment is merely to have put the tune in the book in the first place. I'd rather artists save the thank yous until the end.

There are bands like the Eagles at whose shows the applause at the start of a song is louder than the applause at the end.

my girlfriend gave a guy $10 after he complained about us talking softly at the Waits' show we just attended.
She told him she figured it would make up for his lost moments.
Guy's gal made him give it back.
