Windows Update Kills Zone Alarm

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...t-update-kills

This just happened to me. I booted up, accepted an update, and then my browser couldn't find any websites after I connected to Verizon. I thought it might be an ISP problem, but when I connected to some local unsecured wireless networks I had the same problem. I finally tried closing down Zone Alarm and that solved the problem. I then searched and discovered that the latest Windows update is incompatible with Zone Alarm. Microsoft bastards. I'm right now downloading the free version of Online Armor. I'll replace Zone Alarm when they issue a fix, which I'm guessing could be in a day or 2.

The HD in my SECOND Dell laptop died yesterday, so you're going to get no sympathy from me.

So, since late May I've received two laptops, and a brand new HD.

Dell has really gone downhill.

It's hard to tell if the latest download version is a fix (since it still says: Come back here for other product versions to be released soon - or follow the directions below.), and I didn't want to do the hot fix. Currently I've uninstalled ZA and am running Online Armor.

We all have Dell laptops at work now, Scott. Hard drives drop like flies. I lost one in the 3 years I've had this machine. My friend lost 3 so far. Didn't happen nearly as much with the previous IBMs.

The most puzzling aspect is that these are Western Digital HD's we're talking about. That's not exactly some fly-by-night company known for putting out shitty products.

I have a different problem on my home computer: after the Windows update, I can access the Internet, but my ZoneAlarm doesn't work.

If the update you are referring to is the Windows service pack 3, you can uninstall it just like you would a software program in the 'add or remove programs' function in Control Panel.

I've gotten new hard drive replacements from them for ones that died within the three year warranty, but I'd rather have a hard drive simply last longer. Those who fail to back-up are doomed to lose their data.

What about using "System Restore?" Will that help?

I don't believe yesterday's update was a full service pack.

Not in the least worth the trouble. Since I'm using free firewalls, my solution, to use an alternative until the Zone Alarm update, seemed the easiest.

A firewall, which is available in a free version for home users.

It looks like they have a fix:

Recommended Actions -

Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem

Amen.

I've learned to regularly clone all of my machines onto an external HD.

And I keep all info that I may want to tranfer (i.e. pictures) on a 4GB flash drive.

Phew. Thanks for that, Pete! I took evasive action but wouldn't have been able to figure it out myself, without your warning. That update was just waiting for me to reboot.

I gave up on ZA long ago when it wouldn't play nice with SpySweeper. So SP3 has given me no problems at all.

Only kind of, now, Jimmy. Farm sellers. I hope. Things are very, very close to the bone.

We have only had one hard drive fail on our HPs over the last 15 years.

Not being facetious at all. You had to shut down your Zone Alarm to access the internet; mine just stopped working all by itself (a message at the bottom saying "Zone Alarm Update client connecting to the Internet" is displayed permanently).

I just installed the newest version and it seems to be working fine.

Microsoft sucks.
