We have a good French bakery in town, and they provide our Bastille Day.

They had seven paratroopers drop down out of the sky over Paris and land in the announced order right in front of the reviewing stand in the Place de la Concorde. They all tidied up their parachutes and stood at attention, then Sarko came and shook their hands and patted them on the shoulders. As they were dropping, the TV coverage alternated between cameras on the ground showing them in the brilliant blue sky and cameras on their suits showing a Google Earth view of Paris getting progressively closer. Way cool!

Eastern State Prison Puts Wacky Twist on Bastille Day Bash
|
by KYW's Karin Phillips

Bastille Day celebrations begin in Philadelphia on Thursday night with a "French Fling" bar crawl and are highlighted by the "storming of the Bastille" on Saturday afternoon at a former prison in Fairmount.
Despite the presence of a real guillotine at Eastern State Penitentiary, don't expect a serious exploration of the pivotal events of the French Revolution. Bastille Day in Philadelphia is something else entirely, more histrionics than history.
But that doesn't matter, says Sean Kelley, program director at Eastern State Penitentiary. He says that thousands are attracted to the event every year to take part in a modern interpretation of "Let them eat cake":
"You haven't lived until you've seen 2,000 Krimpets fly over the medieval battlements of Eastern State and pelt small children on the ground. It's fabulous!"
Kelley (shown testing the guillotine recently with a melon) says the apparatus has got to be sharp enough for Saturday afternoon, when the crowd decides if the queen should lose her head or not.
Despite the showmanship, we are assured she doesn't. Kelley says Eastern State Penitentiary, which is normally very concerned with historical accuracy, puts on a Bastille Day celebration that's more like a Monty Python skit.
The Bastille Day festival events wrap up Sunday with French champagne brunches at participating Fairmount restaurants. For more information, go to easternstate.org.

The key to the Bastille lies in a glass case a few miles down the road from me at a house on the Potomac formerly owned by a Mr Washington. He got it from the dude who stole it, M. Lafayette. I myself stole a French flag off a telephone pole in Blois on July 14 when I was a teenager confused about the meaning of "liberation." Enjoy your fête, citoyens. I salute you.

That's cool, man! Have a happy celebration! We didn't do much on the day. Steely Dan last Friday was our personal wingding.
I celebrate France every July 4 by thanking all of my French friends for their part in helping the USA attain independence. Yes, July 4. On July 14, I consider what I can only consider "the French approach to life". I feel like it's a place where individuals can think for themselves and take time off to do so. Before I die, I dearly wish to visit France. I love French Canada, of course. My French is VERY bad, but I love hearing it spoken around me. When I go home to Maine, I hear it frequently and have the opportunity to watch French-Canadian tv. Going home Sunday and look forward to hearing the northern accents I love.
Vive la France et tout le monde Française! (probably wrong-- oh well. Teach me somethin'!)

Two of my dancers last night (a professor of biology and a computer techie) gave us a rousing duet of La Marseillaise during one of the breaks! (Couldn't help but think of that scene in Casablanca.)

That is a beautiful lawn. Happy birthday, Noah. I guess I needn't warn him about flood waters.

We don't celebrate july 14th. And the bastille and the french revolution. When it happened, Frenches had given up on us since a long long time.

Um, I wasn't "mixing" French-Canadian with *the* French. I know you don't celebrate Bastille Day. I just like the language even though you Canadians speak a very different version of it. When I say the entire French world, I'm not speaking strictly of the French political entity.
Besides, though you don't celebrate Bastille day, you did wish your cousins a happy one. I'm not an expert, but I'm not dumb either and boy, it sounds like you think I am.

Last night, my husband and I secretly ordered a pizza from our favorite joint. The kids were out of the house and we considered saving some for them. Then I said, "Let them eat ramen!" my husband giggled, "Ok Marie!" I replied, "that's right, Tuffy. I'm a regular Mommie Antoinette!"

Most of the lawns in the area are like that, the neighborhood is right by the river and I believe the area is in one of the original pre-levee alluvial flood plains.
