John McLaughlin - Extrapolation, 1969

Extrapolation was McLaughlin's first album release as a leader, and it sounds as fresh today as it did way back in 1969. - Walter Kolosky, All About Jazz

I'm sure that you all probably own this album in your collection. I just bought it yesterday and I'm saying to myself why am I so lunatic (to wait so long). It's a wonderful, marvelous, magical album.

Don't wait anymore, go to your local music store (or online) and buy this disc. It's very good!

Track listing:
  1. Extrapolation,
  2. It's Funny, Arjen's Bag,
  3. Pete The Poet,
  4. This is For Us To Share,
  5. Spectrum,
  6. Binky's Dream,
  7. Really You Know,
  8. Two For Two,
  9. Peace Piece
.

Personnel: John McLaughlin- guitar, John Surman- sax, Brian Odges- bass, Tony Oxley- drums

I once slaved over learning Binky's Beam, in my fat Gibson with f-holes jazz guitar phase.

I've been listening to a lot of early McLaughlin lately: This one, "Devotion," "My Goal's Beyond." They still crackle with energy.

Amen to that! It never seems to have gotten the exposure it deserves, although those in the know know all about it. I love the (second?) last track where he does that crazy strumming thing, but the whole thing is beautiful. Wonder what it would have been like if he could have kept Holland (who was nabbed by Miles of course. That totally reminds of the story of Miles walking up to Stevie wonder after a show - Henderson was playing bass for Stevie at the time - and Miles says 'I'm stealing your bass player motherf%&^*er! Ha! Beautiful story...)

I just wished for John, he'd listened to it again before doing "Floating Point"

Extrapolation: just another proof of "nothing can go wrong once you have Dave Holland on board"

Hah! Truer words have been spoken, but only very very rarely! However, i've got to point out that Dave isn't actually playing on this one - it's a chap called Brian Odges. And whatever happened to him one wonders?
