New jazz website

I just spent the last hour happily reading a new jazz blog written by a friend of mine, Michael Steinman. He's by way of being a published critic, and though I frequently differ with him I've always found his arguments to be sound and worth considering. His knowledge of classical jazz is formidable and despite our inevitable occasional differences in taste I've learned a great deal of jazz lore from him. He writes well too, as he should since his day job is that of an English Prof.
The blog is to be found at "Jazz Lives" on the internet and it is free Gve it a try.

Check for "Jazz Lives" and Steinman's name, because a check on the net will take you to either "Jazz Lives", 'lives' being a verb here, an agency for musicians based in Syria, or "Jazz Lives", with 'lives' as a noun- a book of jazz oral bios.

I'll keep trying to connect with Steinman; sounds interesting. Disagreement promotes growth...

I read that blog as well and have a link to it on the Night Lights site. Recommended.

Could you explain the phrase "by way of being"? I've seen it a little, but I was never quite clear on what it meant. At the moment, the only place I can remember seeing it used is in an Agatha Christie novel, so I assume it's a British expression.
