I'm not sure what this thread is all about, but we've had a big thread about "Jazz standards" before.

A theme is basically the main melody of a piece of music. An example of a theme that most everyone has heard is Happy Birthday. Many jazz pieces have a theme at the beginning, improvisation in the middle (sometimes containing variation on the theme), and repeat the theme again at the end.

For me, a theme is a musicians or bands tune they end a set with.
Epistrophy is an example or on record you have The Theme from the Miles '64 concert with the wonderful Mort Fega MC'ing.

Another tangent...

Lots of folks over the years have used theme music for their radio shows. At present I don't use one. Back in the day when I had to back-time into hourly news, etc., etc. I always did.

The ones I liked were the "catchy" pieces that sounded familiar but really weren't.

"Sepia Panorama" by Duke Ellington

"A Handful of Stars" as performed by Serge Chaloff

"I'm Not So Sure" by Cedar Walton
