Frank Rosolino: trombone player

FRANK ROSOLINO

I really enjoyed his free-ranging lines and humour in the music. I liked Thou Swell and How Long which has a great improvisation between Frank Rosolino on the trombone and Richie Kamuca on tenor sax. In the Free For All session of December 1958 Frank Rosolino has some great names in his quintet, like Harold Land on tenor saxophone, Victor Feldman at the piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Stan Levey on drums.

Frank Rosolino was a top pump player, who I believe equaled J.J. Johnson as a post-swing player.

Such a tragedy.

Frank Rosolino was in the Kenton band about the same time, in the late 40s, as Maynard. I don't think they did much together after that. Frank pretty much stayed in Southern California while Maynard was traveling all over the place.

"Free For All" and "Quintet" are both great. He's worth hearing on anything he plays on. The recordings under his name on Capitol are great. I like the work he did on Benny Carter's "Jazz Giant" and Helen Hume's "'Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do".

Uptown put out a live recording from the 70's with Carl Fontana. That's worth a listen. If you can find the Columbia album he did with Conte Condoli about the same time then it's worth having too.

He was with the lighthouse All-Stars for years and is on several of their discs. The front line was Frank, Bud Shank and Bob Cooper with usually Stu Williamson, Stan Levy and Howard Rumsey. Frank followed Shorty Rogers into the band. I spent many happy hours at the lighthouse in the old days.

I have this one on Italian RCA:

Conte Candoli & Frank Rosolino / Conversation

It's very nice.
I know his ex girfriend/"wife" a bit, who was with him at the end.
A very strange lady.

That's the one. RCA, not Columbia.

Rosolino and Candoli recorded two albums during their tour in Europe: "Conversation" in Italy and "Just Friends" in Germany.
