If I were to spend one day, and night in NYC...

Planning a quick trip to experience Jazz NYC style!

I want to fit in as much Jazz related activites/venues as possible.

How would you plan your day? What are the sites I have to visit, best live venue at night? I'm figuring I can run around all day to different spots, but at night I would like to settle down at one club/bar to enjoy a night of live Jazz before heading home.

What are the hot spots? or your favorites? Best place for a Jazz lunch, anything, and everything.

I am going to document my entire day in photos so I can share it online...help plan my day!
Thanks-
Joe

for me, it would totally depend on who is playing where. have you done any research in that regard?

Sorry if this sounds negative but one day in NYC is not enough time to experience what the city has to offer. Come back when you can spend at least a week.

Find out who's playing and plan accordingly. This site has links to most of the jazz club websites: www.bigapplejazz.com

Thanks for the link!
Yes, a week would be nice, but not happening for me right now...
I haven't done any looking into who is playing, or where. I just decided to do this today, so no date has been set. When I go out around here to photograph bands, I just look through the listings of the clubs, find a band with something that draws me to them and head out. I would be sort of doing the same thing for NY-I don't want to put too much prep in picking out who I see, as long as it is Jazz....

Jazz Bug-

Your initial post and your most recent post are considerably different. In the future, it might serve you better to be a bit more specific as to your intentions and expectations.

Just a thought.

Ron, thanks for the grammar lesson, but tell me what is so different?

I addressed the suggestions/questions left for me.
Sorry, I don't live my life by your book.
I didn't think it necessary to have a full open layout of what exactly my plans were. I am simply looking for suggestions on a nice trip into the city to explore Jazz, Jazz clubs, Jazz music, Jazz anything.

Ron, if you want I can get you the flight times for the upcoming month, you can begin my planning from there.

Why bother responding to someone if you just want to shit on them? Find a life away from the internet brother. I know that you have been here for years, but c'mon man, loosen up.

Wow, you took my response a little too hard, hombre. I had no intention of providing a "grammar lesson" ... or any "lesson", for that matter.

And I'm the one who needs "find a life" and "loosen up"?

okay, here are some thoughts for impromptu. you can check a bunch of places in the village---well, of course the vanguard---which can be costly. then, there are 55 bar, smalls, fat cat, jazz gallery, sweet rhythm($$)--all wtihin walking distance. smalls and fat cat stay open late till 3ish, i think. you could check the garage--they have jazz. also rubin museum on fri. hope this helps and have a great free-spirited time. pls post your pix.

I'll second that. The Vanguard, though, isn't really all that expensive. The $35-40 tab covers your drink, so you're set after you pay at the door. The other places Robin mentions are a short walk away, and though I'd not spend a lot of time at Smalls, it's worth popping in to check out. If you're looking for more adventurous stuff, check out the Stone (2nd Street and Avenue C). You could catch an early set there and either cab it or walk across town to the Village to make the second or third set at the Vanguard.

I'd hit the Vanguard early set and then look at the listings for elewhere close-br for later sets.

Or, hit the Jazz Standard at 7:30, VV at 9:00 and then somewhere else at 11:00 then Fat Cat or Smalls after...

Whew, exhausting. I've done quite a few "double headers" back in the day, but I don't think I did triples.

Jazz Standard early show, Vanguard 2nd set, Smalls, Fat Cat or The Jazz Gallery. Sometimes the 55 Bar goes late. All of this, providing you can afford it of course.

You obviously haven't heard what Jim McNeely is doing with that band.
