Festival International de Jazz de Montréal 2009

montrealjazzfest.com

Montreal, Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - The 30th anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is already looking great! After announcing the release of a superb photo album commemorating three decades of musical magic, the Festival reveals the names of the major artists already signed on for the 2009 program of the Jazz All Year Round series, presented by General Motors: the divine Diana Krall and quintet of legends the Five Peace Band! Tickets go on sale this Saturday, November 22 at noon.

Diana Krall - May 6 and 7, 8 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier de la PdA - With all due respect to Mr. Costello, Diana Krall is enjoying a genuine love affair with this Festival! Since her dazzling breakthrough in Montreal in 1995, Diana Krall has visited us a number of times, but hasn’t played here since 2004. All will remember that appearance, when she starred in the Festival’s 25th anniversary gala, at the Centre Bell, a memorable evening subsequently immortalized on DVD! This year, the world’s most popular female jazz singer/pianist finally returns, this time to Place des Arts, where she will expand her usual accompaniment to include a symphony orchestra. It’s an all-new show, and the rumour slipping out of Rio de Janeiro, where she recorded her forthcoming 2009 album, is that we can expect a masterpiece!

Five Peace Band with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Brian Blade - April 28, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA - Originally a track on guitarist John McLaughlin’s Floating Point album, Five Peace Band is the name of the group he co-pilots with pianist Chick Corea. The two musicians are collaborating for the first time since the legendary sessions for Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew in August 1969, which led them, respectively, to found the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever, absolute touchstones in the history of jazz-rock. Kenny Garrett (sax), Christian McBride (double bass) and Brian Blade (drums) join in for this historic summit.

Please remember that tickets remain for new concerts by Susie Arioli, Wednesday, November 26 and Thursday, November 27, 8 p.m., in Théâtre Outremont.

A non-profit organization, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is pursuing its mission of disseminating and developing jazz and its musical cousins for the ninth year in a row, by reinvesting its surpluses in the presentation of special concerts in its Jazz All-Year Round series. With support from public partners, specifically, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and Canadian Heritage, it can thus offer Montrealers and visitors to the city the chance to experience the rhythms of jazz all-year round! The Festival also recognizes the support of Bell, partner in the series, as well as the Hyatt Regency Montréal, official hotel of the Jazz All-Year Round series.

Pink Martini with full orchestra, Buddy Guy, Melody Gardot, Chucho Valdés, Madeleine Peyroux, Susie Arioli, Kenny Garrett, Patricia Barber, as well as Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Eric Harland

30th anniversary of the Festival
The festivities come home for Christmas!
Montreal, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - Sure, the 30th anniversary edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal officially runs next July 1 to 12, but here’s a pre-Christmas foretaste of the musical gifts we can expect next year! These dozen new concerts feature peerless proponents of jazz and its related musics and are fully representative of the cultural richness and diversity that have forged the reputation of the world’s largest jazz festival. They’re certain to light up the eyes of the hungriest fanatic-not to mention making a great stocking-stuffer! An exciting teaser from next summer’s musical celebration par excellence presented by General Motors in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan! Tickets for all of these concerts go on sale this Saturday, December 6 at noon.

Pink Martini and Orchestra - July 7, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA (Pleins Feux General Motors series) - They named their group Pink Martini “because it sounded festive and fabulous!” One listen and you’ll heartily agree! Swing, jazz, classical, pop, all musics-and all languages!-are welcomed by these 10 multicultural citizens of the world. In this highly democratic group, touring the world to SRO audiences, every member contributes a certain something, an aspect of his own cultural personality, with a single common goal: enjoyment! Definitively irresistible, utterly refreshing, they’ve multiplied the potency of their musical cocktail this time out, bringing in an orchestra of 51 musicians! Consume without moderation!

Buddy Guy / Susan Tedeschi - July 2, 8:30 p.m., Métropolis (Rythmes Bell series) - It’s a guitar-iffic blues double bill! On one hand, the legendary Buddy Guy-a Festival regular, and always a fan favourite!-whose high-voltage guitar and unique voice took him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On the other, for the first time at the Festival, Susan Tedeschi, with a voice that recalls Janis and Bonnie Raitt and songs from Back to the River, released in November. If you’re a blues-guitar die-hard, you’ll be in heaven this summer!

Melody Gardot - July 1, 6 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (En voix series) - It’s unanimous: we can’t wait to welcome her back! The genuine revelation of last summer’s Festival, her incredible personal magnetism made it easy to forget the terrible road accident that originally brought her to music as a form of rehabilitative therapy. It’s a musical therapy that heals her audience as well, from the very first pop-jazz notes emanating from this incredibly charming 22-year-old American singer, pianist and guitarist. Passion in its purest form!

Dave Holland / Gonzalo Rubalcaba / Chris Potter / Eric Harland - July 1, 9:30 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (Les Grands concerts TD Canada Trust series) - Those who’ve seen and heard the quartet find it hard to believe they only formed last year, so completely integrated is their music. When brilliant bassist Dave Holland is joined by saxophonist Chris Potter, Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and drummer Eric Harland, we can immediately add the term “extroardinary” to “quartet”! It will be a genuine and rare pleasure to see these four virtuosos united onstage, in a jazz evening no real connoisseur will dare to miss!

Chucho Valdés Quintet - July 2, 9:30 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (Les Grands concerts TD Canada Trust series) - After a seven year absence, Chucho finally returns! Although known by all as the Cuban ambassador of Latin jazz, Chucho Valdés will not be confined to any one style, playing as beautifully with the likes of Michel Legrand and Charles Aznavour as he does with the jazz greats. Winner of five Grammys, he comes from thoroughbred stock, being the son of great pianist Bebo Valdés. Gifted with unequaled speed, he is among the living legends of jazz. In fact, Jazz Magazine has conferred upon him the very enviable title “the most complete pianist in the world”.

Madeleine Peyroux - July 3, 6 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (En voix series) - Four years have passed since Madeleine Peyroux last visited the Festival, and how we’ve missed her! After her brief but well-noted participation in the last summer’s major tribute to Leonard Cohen, La Peyroux treats herself to a show in Théâtre Maisonneuve, where she’ll treat us to her repertoire of folk, country and ’30s jazz. With a voice refined by the passing years, she incarnates Piaf as well as Gainsbourg, and reinvents the words, melodies and phrasing of Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Joséphine Baker, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Often compared to the great Billie Holiday, Peyroux finally returns with her repertoire of favourites as well as songs from Bare Bones, due for release in March.

Susie Arioli - July 4, 6 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (En voix series) - After a country detour with Learn To Smile Again, Susie Arioli and guitarist Jordan Officer return to jazz with Night Lights (5 stars from ejazznews.com, and 10,000 copies sold in a few short weeks!), a new album including the compositions of George and Ira Gershwin, Johnny Green, Burke / Van Heusen… From Blue Skies to Beyond The Sea, it’s the perfect opportunity to rediscover the distinctive and original sound of Susie Arioli and appreciate the sensibility, symbiosis and subtlety of two artists in full maturity. They’re back by popular demand, after last week’s fabulous success at Théâtre Outremont!

Patricia Barber - July 10, 6 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (En voix series) - With her piano and her deep, distinctive voice, Festival darling Patricia Barber sings it her way. Her latest album, The Cole Porter Mix, obviously dedicated to her icon, validates more than ever the pertinence of her exploratory approach, the singularity of her style. She’s a must-see in concert, not just for the opportunity to enjoy a great jazz singer, but to get reacquainted with her piano, which she sometimes forsakes in the recording studio.

Kenny Garrett, Sketches of Miles Davis - July 4, 8 p.m., Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, PdA (Jazz Beat TD Canada Trust series) - At 18, he played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra; later, he stood alongside McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Marcus Miller and of course Miles Davis, with whom he would become identified due to an intense similarity of spirit and gesture (he played with his back to the audience, like his mentor). And let’s face it-there are worse musical models! Though he loves jazz, this alto saxophonist is open to its descendants and its musical neighbours, jumping into be bop, funk and pop, passionately claiming the title “free spirit”, an artist in constant evolution. Expect a sublime evening, with music from Sketches of Miles Davis, recorded live in the Iridium in New York, as the pièce de résistance.

Stefano Bollani and Enrico Rava - June 30, 10:30 p.m., Gesù - Centre de créativité (Jazz dans la nuit series) - Even though 33 years separate them, they are musical and spiritual brothers. The elder, Enrico Rava, is a trumpeter, the younger a pianist. Stefano Bollani was all of 13 when he first attended a concert by the man who would become his teacher, his mentor, his friend. Rava, among the first Italian jazzmen to come to international prominence, would later persuade the young cadet, then at the Conservatorio in Florence, to devote himself to jazz. Together, these two talented Italians have developed a rare symbiosis and a lyricism more evident than ever on their remarkable recent album, The Third Man, released last year.

Please be advised that tickets remain for concerts by Diana Krall with a symphony orchestra (May 6 and 7, 8 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA) and the Five Peace Band with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Brian Blade (April 28, 8 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA), presented as part of the Jazz All Year Round series.

Jazz All-Year Round

Montreal, Tuesday, January 13, 2009 - Ringing right in tune with the musical richness and diversity that await us this summer in the 30th anniversary of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the Jazz All-Year Round series, presented by General Motors, adds a slate of new concerts to its program. Here are eight new opportunities to dive back into the sounds we love, featuring the finest ambassadors of jazz and its musical cousins! Tickets go on sale this Saturday, January 17 at noon.

Yves Léveillé Sextet with special guest pianist Eri Yamamoto from New York - February 11, 7:30 p.m., Savoy du Métropolis - Montreal pianist and composer Yves Léveillé met New York pianist Eri Yamamoto in the Big Apple in 2004. This concert for two pianos and instrumental ensemble presents a reunion of these two magnificent musicians. Also featuring Aron Doyle (trumpet), Roberto Murray (alto and baritone sax), Frank Lozano (soprano and tenor sax), Marc Lalonde (double bass) and Ugo Di Vito (drums).

François Richard Nouvel Orchestra with Mark Feldman - February 13, 8 p.m., Gesù - Centre de créativité - The François Richard Nouvel Orchestra offers up jazz as modern as it is romantic. Onstage, the outfit presents pieces from the Nouvel Orchestra album as well as new compositions by flautist François Richard. The 13-piece orchestra will be joined by renowned violinist Mark Feldman, appearing as a soloist and also directing the string section. A member of John Abercrombie’s group, the guest of honour has previously played with such artists as John Zorn, Chris Potter, Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano, as well as leading his own ensemble.

Puerto Plata - February 27, 8 p.m., Savoy du Métropolis - Born in 1923, singer-guitarist Jose Manuel Cobles, alias Puerto Plata, recorded his first album in… 2006! At the very least, we know this music was ripe for the picking! Indeed, it was worth the wait: his blend of merengue, ranchera, gauracha, and bolero is simply irresistible! Alain Brunet of La Presse reserved a spot for Mujer de Cabaret on his list of the 10 best world music albums of 2008. A rare survivor of the golden age of the bachata, Puerto Plata is, despite his 85 years, a fountain of youth, delivering a music of undeniable authenticity and sensuality! Rest assured, he arrives with a sense of purpose, doubly ready to celebrate with us on this, the National Day of his native Dominican Republic!

Coral Egan - March 6, 8 p.m., Gesù - Centre de créativité - Jazz, R&B, folk, pop, soul, reggae-Coral Egan has explored them all, and it’s that eclectic approach to music that has shaped the sound on two albums helmed by Charles Papasoff: My Favorite Distraction and its successor, Magnify, whose high-calibre production has impressed many. Coral’s is a unique, hybrid style, accented by bittersweet melodies brightened by a healthy dose of humour and observation. Her incredibly personal songs have lyrics to match, and while firmly rooted in her jazz heritage, Coral incorporates such a wealth of sounds on her recordings that pigeonholing her to a particular genre is difficult. Accompanied by four top-flight musicians-Al Baculis (bass), Jay Atwill (guitar and vocals), Malka Tirolien (piano and vocals) and Sam Harrisson (drums)-Egan returns after her acclaimed performance at last summer’s Festival!

Guy Bélanger - March 7, 8 p.m., Lion d’Or - After firing up the place with his harmonica last October, Guy Bélanger returns to the scene of his triumph, the Lion d’Or! An intense and brilliant harmonica player with a 30-year career, Guy Bélanger has starred alongside Bob Walsh, Les Colocs and such legends as Muddy Waters and Koko Taylor. Over the last few years, we’ve enjoyed his work on soundtracks from his brother Louis’ films (Post Mortem, Gaz bar blues-winner of a Jutra award in 2004-and, most recently, The Timekeeper). And now, the time has come for him to take centre stage with his own debut solo album, very well-received upon its release in early 2008, a blend of folk and blues featuring his own songs and covers of Lyle Lovett and Marc Broussard.

Spirit of Brazil - March 10, 8 p.m., Métropolis - This musical heat will be especially appreciated in early March! These ambassadors of Brazilian music-including artistic director Mônica Freire, Margareth Menezes, Mart’nália, Rodrigo Maranhão and Celso Fonseca-summon springtime to the beat of rhythms as hot as they are suave! Accompanied by fiery dancers and a blazing house band featuring seven musicians from Canada, France and Brasil, they’re guaranteed to whip up the blood of everyone in Métropolis! Bom dia Brasil!

Kiran Ahluwalia - March 13, 8 p.m., Savoy du Métropolis - She was an enchanting presence at the 25th anniversary of the Festival. Originally from northern India, a former Torontonian turned New Yorker, Ahluwalia bewitched us then with an album that had already earned her a Juno in the World Music category. She returns with Wanderlust, also nominated for a Juno in 2008. A superb album melding gentle Saharan rhythms, the nostalgia of Portuguese fado and the languourous sung poetry of Indian love ghazals, this is a sound that truly merits the title World Music.

Habib Koité & Bamada - April 14, 8 p.m., Club Soda - According to Rolling Stone, this guitar virtuoso is “the biggest pop star in Mali”, while Bonnie Raitt, with whom he sang a duet, compared him to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn! This modern griot, long considered one of Africa’s best-kept secrets, ranks today as one of contemporary music’s major figures. Inspired by the diverse cultures of different Malian regions, he and his group Bamada made up for a 6-year recording absence with last year’s magnificent Afriki (the Bambara name for Africa), singing of his continent and the challenges that face it.

Please be advised that tickets remain for these previously announced concerts in the Jazz All-Year Round series:

F. - à Léo, Tribute to Léo Ferré, from a concept developed by Roberto Cipelli, with Roberto Cipelli, Attilio Zanchi, Philippe Garcia and the special participation of Gianmaria Testa and Paolo Fresu (February 18, Métropolis)

Pacifika (February 19, Savoy du Métropolis)

Intakto (February 21, Club Soda)

SFJAZZ Collective with Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Miguel Zenón, Robin Eubanks, Renee Rosnes, Matt Penman and Eric Harland (February 27, Métropolis)

Five Peace Band with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Brian Blade (April 28, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA)

Diana Krall (May 6 and 7, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA)

More big names!!!

Here some news from the Web Site of the Festival:

Beirut, Chris Botti, Jackson Browne, Pink Martini, Ornette Coleman Quartet, Maria Schneider, King Sunny Ade and Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, Wayne Shorter Quartet, The Lost Fingers, Gary Burton Quartet Revisited with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Antonio Sanchez, George Wein and the Newport All-Stars, Battle of the Bands with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Harry James Orchestra…

30 Years of Diversity - Now!
Montreal, Tuesday, March 10, 2009 - This year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal celebrates its 30th birthday! Three decades of showcasing jazz in all its forms, from the pure to the polychromatic, inspired by every style, absorbing every source… and in keeping with this protean music, the 30th edition of the Festival, presented by General Motors in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan, offers a program of incredible diversity, with dedication to the utmost quality as its guiding principle. This first batch of indoor concerts captures the mood, from jazz fusion to American rock, with trips through free jazz, ’80s gypsy music, Afrobeat and visits from the music of Mexico and Eastern Europe. And remember that this is just a glimpse of the full program for this 30th edition of the Festival, which runs from July 1 to 12, 2009. Tickets for these concerts go on sale this Saturday, March 14 at noon.

A rainbow of jazz!

Gary Burton Quartet Revisited with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Antonio Sanchez - June 26, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA
Chris Botti with orchestra - July 2, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA

After his 2006 visit and last year’s appearance during the Festival’s tribute to Leonard Cohen, American trumpeter Chris Botti returns to charm us anew. In his last concert, he transported us to Italia; in late March, he changes direction with Chris Botti in Boston, a new album and DVD. This summer, his suave trumpet finds an exquisite new setting, at the heart of an orchestra sure to bring new depth to the virtuoso’s pop-jazz interpretations.

Jackson Browne - July 11, 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA

Battle of the Bands starring the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Harry James Orchestra - July 12, 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA

Maria Schneider Orchestra - opening act: Julian Lage - June 30, 8 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA

Wayne Shorter Quartet- July 3, 9:30 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (Les Grands concerts TD Canada Trust series) -

Ornette Coleman Quartet - July 9, 9:30 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (Les Grands concerts TD Canada Trust series) - Fifty years into his career, this peerless jazz titan insists that we consider him not simply as a saxophonist and artist, but as a composer who confounds and obliterates every boundary. You’d think that, even on the threshold of his 80th spring, he still had a reputation to make! When you practically invented free jazz, when you alternate at will between sax, trumpet and violin, when you’ve established a “Sound Grammar” and shared the stage with the Grateful Dead, all without compromising your technicolour personality, no label would even dare stick to you! Ornette Coleman resting on his laurels? Come on: he’s far too young for that! It’s a long-awaited return for a living legend who last played the Festival in 1988!

George Wein and the Newport All-Stars with Lew Tabackin, Randy Sandke, Howard Alden, Peter Washington and Lewis Nash - July 10, 8 p.m., Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, PdA

The Lost Fingers - July 4, 6 p.m., Métropolis (Rythmes Bell series) - Last year, they were the talk of the Festival, not to mention the rest of Quebec! A strange and exhilarating blend of Django Reinhardt (referenced in the trio’s name) and Samantha Fox, the crazed sound of The Lost Fingers is an unhinged and inspired musical anachronism! Virtuoso musicians in love with gypsy jazz and the kitschy hits of a zany decade, they’re back to surprise us and shake up our summer with songs from their debut album, Lost in the 80s.

King Sunny Ade and Femi Kuti & The Positive Force - July 5, 8:30 p.m., Métropolis

Beirut - opening act: The Dodos - July 11, 8:30 p.m., Métropolis (Rythmes Bell series) - Two added shows

Jeff Beck - July 6, 6 p.m. (added show) and 9:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA

Pink Martini and Orchestra - July 7 and 8 (additional show), 7:30 p.m., Salle Wilfrid‑Pelletier, PdA

Add the above concerts to those already announced as part of the 30th program of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, tickets already on sale (visit montrealjazzfest.com for info): Susie Arioli; Dave Holland / Gonzalo Rubalcaba / Chris Potter / Eric Harland; Buddy Guy / Susan Tedeschi; Melody Gardot; Chucho Valdés Quintet; Madeleine Peyroux; Patricia Barber; Kenny Garrett; Stefano Bollani and Enrico Rava.

Tickets go on sale this Saturday, March 14 at noon

David, I'll see you there. I get in the evening of the 2nd and will leave either the 5th or 6th (waiting for final schedule to see if anything will warrant a vacation day if I leave Monday).

Ornette! Wow, I hadn't seen that! I'll be there for sure!

Wayne Shorter... Maria Schneider... Well, well, it seems the festival bigwigs actually thought of putting a little jazz on their schedule this year (just kidding, well, not really...).

Bu sure I will be there (Ornette), I bought my ticket at noon! I'm anxious to see the full list of the show in the beginning of May.

I was about to buy a Shorter ticket, but the service charges put me off, so I'm going to play it by ear. I've seen this group 3 times.

Did all the money the market lost in the US just migrate north of the 49th parallel or something? I thought Canada was out of money too.

I mean, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, same festival?

Good God, I may have to invade my retirement fund to get up there this year.

And anyone at Enrico Rava's gig, hope to see you there.

Schedule is up. I'll be there evening of 5/2 through 5/4/

I'm a definite for Joyce on 5/4. and probably Miles from India that same night (didn't love the album, but can't resist Rudresh, Cosey & Srinivas, and I like Payton too).

On 5/3 I'll probably pass on Shorter and catch Konitz with Minsarah at Gesu.

On the 2nd I'll probably play it by ear and catch freebies once I'm settled in.

I got a hotel room in a perfect location, at Rene Levesque & St. Laurent. It's a new studio hotel--single bed & kitchenette for only $65 CAD.

There's a HUGE announcement to come. Today I believe. Monday the 11th.

One of the biggest, most fun announcements the festival's ever made.

Stevie Wonder
opens the Place des festivals with a concert

inaugurating the 30th edition of the Festival
Montreal, Monday, May 11, 2009 - The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is extremely proud to offer our loyal fans another gorgeous gift as part of this 30th anniversary: a very special free outdoor concert by American music giant Stevie Wonder, in his first-ever visit to the Festival. Alain Simard has dreamt of the show for years, the programming team has regularly discussed it, and it's finally a reality! There's a palpable excitement in the air as we all eagerly await this Grand événement General Motors that's guaranteed to enter the history books! Stevie Wonder will literally launch the Festival's 30th anniversary celebrations when he opens the brand-new Place des Festivals this Tuesday, June 30 at 9:30 p.m. on the General Motors stage.
Opening of highly-anticipated Place des festivals
The Grand événement General Motors with Stevie Wonder opens this 30th edition of the Festival with the first musical celebration in the Place des festivals, but its full-fledged official inauguration will come in September, once it is completed with hundreds of fountains designed by Michel Lemieux. This plaza is the first in a three-phase development of the overall plan for the Quartier des spectacles-prepared by architects Daoust Lestage and urban designer Clément Demers-which will ultimately include three magnificent public spaces. This extraordinary project for Montreal will likewise ensure the future of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, which would otherwise have lost over 50% of the surface area of its outdoor site.
Stevie Wonder, star of the free outdoor Grand événement General Motors
Stevie Wonder, peerless icon of American black music, is the ideal choice to illuminate an event as illustrious as the Festival's 30th anniversary. A virtual human jukebox, his concerts celebrate his songbook with a string of hits that have defined our lives and live forever in our memories: My Cherie Amour, Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours, Superstition, You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, Isn't She Lovely, Living For The City, Don't You Worry ‘Bout A Thing, Sir Duke, I Wish, Pastime Paradise, Master Blaster, Part Time Lover and dozens of others. Twenty years have already passed since Stevie Wonder was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... and over 45 since his first hit in 1962, when the pop world knew him as "Little Stevie Wonder"! Just as brilliant today-ask to see his twentysomething Grammy Awards-and just as adored (we've long since stopped counting the millions of albums sold...), the prodigious African-American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Michigan ranks among those rare artists whose extraordinary public appeal remains as constant and passionate, decade after decade.
For this very special evening, giant screens will be deployed on other stages throughout the Festival site, transmitting the exceptional event live to what promises to be a monumental public gathering!
This musical gift to Montrealers is exclusively made possible thanks to the support of our three levels of government, particularly Industry Canada, as part of the effort to boost tourism to the city and contribute to the enhancement of its international profile.
The 30th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal will run from June 30 to July 12, 2009

Lois - I just sent you a message. I haven't seen the new press room, so I don't know if there's a natural place in the new building for a hang (I'm guessing there is...) But there are some other places I can recommend, nearby. We often met late in the afternoon, outside where the press room used to be - and then went to eat before the earliest of the evening's ticketed shows started. Everything's walking distance, I've yet to get in a cab in Montreal.

Nor I, but not everything's in walking distance from everywhere. The metro system is great.

Totally cool Pete, thank you. I'm trying to figure out when to go. Montreal Fest has been very kind and said I can come when I want.

How big are the venues for eg where Stevie is playing and then other venues and do you walk from one to another

Everything at the festival is walking distance. Where Stevie is playing is on the street, and will be painfully crowded, but I'm guessing the festival might be able to get you into a some private event on the balcony of the Hyatt to watch the show from. The theaters at Place des Arts range from maybe 500-2500 seats, give or take. Metropolis is a club with mostily standing space, Club Soda is a sit down club. They're all within a couple of blocks of each other. A number of blocks surrounding the Place des Arts are closed to traffic and the stages for the free outdoor shows are set up on those streets.

Joyce was fantastic with JC's own Helio Alves on piano. Miles from India was great fun--didn't love the album, but live it was great to see Rudresh & U Srinivas in particular, and Nicholas Payton acquitted himself well. Thanks to an angel I got to see Shorter--the band hasn't become in the least bit tired. Outdoor highlight was Luis Mario Ochoa with Hilario Duran.

The smoked meat at Schwartz's still beats any NY corned beef sandwich. I finished my last St. Viateur bagel last night.

It was great hanging with Lounge Chair and his radio partner in crime LJ.

It was great to see you, Pete - and David too...

I'll post some reflections of performances I saw in a day or two, but I'm a bit distracted at the moment by the death of Len Dobbin during the festival. Mike Chamberlain (and a co-host, engineer and producer who's names escape me now) actually hosted a gathering in memory of Len this morning, and it was remarkable and very moving: a few of us gathered to actually broadcast a memorial show in Len's honor, during his regularly scheduled time...the last edition of Dobbin's Den on CKUT, where Len has most recently been doing his show.

All sorts of people dropped by (beloved musicians, childhood friends, Dorothee and Monique (Len's "Guardian Angels", as he called them)to swap stories about Len, and play much of the actual playlist he'd planned (!). A dear friend of Lens had gone to his appt to find a couple of pieces of music (like Pepper Adams tune "Dobbin" and so forth, I believe) and been able to find the cardboard box Len had assembled the cd's for the show in.

Lois Gilbert emailed some love and Mike read her note on the air. Did you hear this, Lois?

I'll be posting photos from this gathering at my facebook page tomorrow, and I'd note here that Len's own facebook page (as well as at least one other recently created in his memory) has become a memorial to him. Other photos from that show have already been posted by some of the others who were there this morning...
