Joe Romano- RIP

I just wanted to let folks know the great saxophonist Joe Romano died today. Joe was diagnosed with lung cancer 6 months ago. Joe worked with the who's who of jazz names such as Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Woody Herman, Chuck Mangione, Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins, Art Pepper, Barry Harris and a host of others.
Joe was my musical father. He hired me for my first jazz gigs at 16! I was honored to have played on the only CD he ever made under his own name THIS IS THE MOMENT and played a ton of gigs with him over many years. He was an incredible musician and a dear friend. I will share some stories later.

I regret so much Joe Romano left us. I remember vividly when he played in Rio de Janeiro, in September 1958, as a member of the Woody Herman orchestra. He was one of the Four Brothers along with Jay Migliori (tenor), Marty Flax (tenor) and Al Belletto (baritone). As far as I remember, other musicians of the band were Bob Clarke, Danny Stiles, Willie Thomas, Hal Posey and Al Forte (trumpets), Jimmy Guinn, Roger DeLillo and Willie Dennis (trombones), Al Plank (piano), Major Holley (bass), Jimmy Campbell (drums) and Jerry Winters (vocal). The orchestra had a huge success.
