Freddie Hubbard - R.I.P.

On Saturday, Freddie Hubbard suffered heart failure and has been in ICU ever since. I don't want to state what I've heard of the specifics, since it hasn't been confirmed, but he is in critical condition.

I'm praying for a speedy recovery to one of the giants of jazz. Freddie, hang in there as each tomorrow will be a bit better than today. God bless you.

the latest report i heard is that he's showing improvement. his organs (kidney & liver) are starting to function again and they are scheduled to remove the breathing apparatus, if they haven't already done so by now. and he is opening his eyes now. all good progress. let's hope.

My favorite trumpet player and probably the biggest influence on me as a player. I think Freddie is pretty underrated in a lot of ways. Here's hoping he gets well...

I agree. In modern jazz trumpet, Freddie Hubbard is the man who had it all going - chops like Clifford Brown and blues swagger like Lee Morgan.

Shit, Freddie's had a rough road to hoe for a while now. It's not even about "can he still play" anymore. Man's earned a rest, may he be comfortable and pain-free and around to joy his family for a while yet.

i talked today with someone who visited him yesterday. he's still in ICU but making what seems like remarkable progress. he apparently is now awake and alert but i believe is not able to speak because of medical apparatus.

Got this from jazztimes.com just now:

An article published Monday in Washington, D.C.’s City Paper, claiming that trumpet great Freddie Hubbard was in a coma, was disputed yesterday by his colleague David Weiss of the New Jazz Composers Octet. The article, credited to Michael J. West, claimed that Hubbard had “suffered heart failure and collapsed last Sunday, December 1,” at his home in Sherman Oaks, and was lying in a coma in a hospital in that city. The piece also quoted Los Angeles jazz marketing executive Ricky Schultz as saying that Hubbard was in critical condition.

According to Weiss, “Freddie did not collapse. He was having trouble breathing and was taken by ambulance to Sherman Oaks Hospital on Wednesday, November 26. He did have a heart attack. He was unconscious for a couple of days, induced by his doctors, who thought the treatment they were giving him would cause him too much pain if he was conscious. He has been awake for around two weeks now. He is still hooked up to breathing apparatus but again is conscious and coherent. He is getting stronger every day but has a ways to go.”

Hubbard, who has experienced a number of health problems since the early ’90s, recently released On the Real Side, his first new album since 2001. He was featured on the cover of the October issue of JazzTimes.

at least as of last night, that was not true. he's still in serious condition, sleeps a lot and cannot speak because of the breathing aids, but he is not in a coma.

It's important for all of us to do a little homework before buying into some internet crap or not being in a hurry to post a response to something which hasn't been certified.

All the best for a prompt, full recovery, Freddie.

I spent a lot of time with his music when I was in college and beyond. Really gravitated to his sound early on, loved him even on the Creed Taylor stuff.
I wish Mr. Hubbard days free of suffering and every good thing.

He did pass away. Early this morning. This is an end of an era. He was the greatest trumpet player, imho.
