He's playing at Kuumbwa pretty soon but I'll be in Mexico for winter break. Maybe David Gitin and Surfer can go and report back.

I've always dug Pharoah Sanders, but have never had the occasion to witness his magic in a live setting ... yet.
Will you be in Mexico on January 2nd, 3rd & 4th, too, Gerardo? If not, he's scheduled for Yoshi's in S.F. on those dates.

I saw Pharaoh a few times in the early 80's and then in 1990 at the VV. He was very entertaining every time. I've heard that he's mellowed a lot recently, though.

Well, mellow is in the ears of the beholder I guess but I saw him 3 or 4 years ago and he was taking no prisoners. With Harold Mabern on piano and Joe Farnsworth on drums, there were some pretty heavy sound waves hitting me like a tsunami. I wouldn't miss him if he was coming back to my city.
If you dig Gnawa music from Morocco, this is pretty intense:

I saw Pharoah at Slugs in '73. Then I saw him at the RegattaBar in Cambridge in '93. The beard was bigger and grayer, but otherwise he hadn't lost a step. And he was still doing that thing with the big brass bowl at the beginning of the set.

Yeah, I'm coming back to CA on January 21... I'm also going to miss the Jean-Michel Pilc trio, and Joey DeFrancesco with Bireli Lagrene. Thanks though!

You're welcome, Gerardo. Just trying to help.
Having said that, I'll miss far more than you, I'm sure.

That's it, man. The Creator Has a Master plan is a staple for Christmas around my house. My first jazz concert was with Pharoah in 1973. A triple bill of an ABC Impulse tour. Pharoah's band, Gato Barbieri's Latin America thing, and the Keith Jarrett group with Dewey.
Pharoah was the only one I knew as a kid coming in to the concert. I used to hear his music on WABX, a free form, mainly rock station in the late 60's to mid 70's. There was a guy who specialized in the 50's music, so one day I was hearing all this 50's rock, and r&b and suddenly a blissful, screaming saxophonist that was Pharoah.
It's been at least 15 years since I've seen him last. With Randy Weston's Spirits of Our Ancestors I think.

He's probably best appreciated live. He has the ability to suddenly shift his dynamic level into overdrive, which I don't think recordings can ever adequately capture.

He is great live. I believe his band is at Iridium maybe this week or soon-- and William Henderson (his best pianist, imho) is w/ him!

Mark Myers jazz waxes poetic on Sanders' "Welcome to Love" at his blog site: http://www.jazzwax.com./
One fine recent Sanders release that might be under the radar screen of some is a live concert from 2000 with Kahil El' Zabar, Ari Brown, and Malachi Favors. There is an excellent studio album of this group from the same period, but this one is even more exciting.

He's definitely captures the essence of the Coltrane sound. Probably using the same vintage horn and mouthpiece?

Anyone else like Black Unity?
I think its feckin' brilliant. You got all that African stuff - the thumb pianos and that, and you have two great bassists - Stanley Clarke and Cecil McBee(i think is the other one).
Top, top notch stuff. I think it's a live recording - you can hear a cheer at the end. Man, i wish i'd been at that gig...
