Everything's a fad in the larger scheme of things.

Hm, I'd instead say that everything's pointless in the larger scheme of things.
But Sergio, what point there is reduces to entertainment, as most things one does outside meeting survival needs.

Any advantage of Twitter over Facebook? Sounds like it only performs a couple of fb functions. I don't get its usefulness.

It's much more mobile-friendly, though I don't use those functions. Otherwise, essentially similar to fb status updates, though I think it has a more full-blown internal culture. Spontaneous channels form, etc, and it's a lot lighter than facebook, easier to juggle. Many users of both use an app to dupe their posts to both. I just kinda split thoughts between them, based on mood.

I've only had one facebook "friend" do this, and after probably a dozen pointless updates in a few hours, I defriended him.

I don't really see how update frequency is a particular burden (update vacuity is another issue), but what does annoy is when you happen to follow that kind of user on both apps, which means lots of duplicates.

You wouldn't follow people you wish to ignore in the first place.

it was the two combined, plus barely knowing who the person was to begin with.

Maybe there's a new paradigm for "friend."
Where I come from, a friend is someone who you have known for quite a while who has shared experiences with you and whom you can count on, or someone like many of those here, who I have met and shared some good times with.
An unknown person on the internet hardly qualifies.

Click the link in post #6 and click through from there, you'll see a bunch of pointless remarks on people's days, events, musings, blah blah.

I am, however, considering starting to tweet as a minimalist literary form, but I'd have to precompose my tweets. In which case, I wouldn't have to use twitter.
