So, I haven't been posting here very much in 2008, except for the political threads, up to the election. There was a time I posted here quite a bit. I first came onto this board in December 2003 as a Bush-supporting neoconservative, a position I quickly abandoned in 2004 when I found out that it would win me few friends. Secretly I still love George W. Bush, but I want so badly to be very, very popular.
With that same theme in mind, I am engaging in this further bit of narcissism to create my own thread announcing that I am leaving the United States in two weeks. I will be doing research for my dissertation on a 10-month grant in Namibia. I already have my place in Windhoek, will be taking some lessons in Oshiwambo and going to the archives, and then doing a lot of oral interviews. Past trips have taught me that my internet access will be limited while I am there, and so I am announcing my absence now. If all goes well I should be back in the United States in mid-November 2009, although I hope to come back a couple weeks earlier to catch the Baltimore Orioles World Series parade.
So at the very least I won't be posting anything here for the next 11 months or so. I wish all of you the best. If and when I do secure time on the Internet, I plan to post updates and photos to a blog I just created. The address is
http://treesnevermeet.blogspot.com. There is nothing there now, the address is just a placeholder for when I arrive in Windhoek. "Trees Never Meet" is a Namibian saying, translated from the original Otjiherero.
I'm going to be spending the next couple weeks with my family. Have a Happy New Year.
