Amherst, Mass.

Any good places to eat there?

Judies? Or?

It's been years since I've been out to Western MA.

Back in the day, the place to eat was the next town over - Northampton. It's a very nice place to visit too.

Can't help you out with the restaurant recommendations, sorry.

My friend who works at the college is a vegetarian, so I wouldn't even bother to ask him.

Sorry...I really did think Pete said that his friend was a veterinarian at the college so I wrote that. Maybe veterinarians have poor taste. They do have poor judgment in animal nutrition - I can tell you that right off the bat.

You're getting animal nutrition information from bats?

A veteran Aryan might be able to tell you where to get good Wienerschnitzel.

You get that at the "Student Prince," but that is in Springfield, not Amherst.

Well, my veterinarian swears that a raw meat diet is dangerous even though it literally saved Simone's life (that little knucklehead Simone). A raw diet is the only way to go imo if your cat has a bowel disease. But really and truly all the vets are in bed with "prescription" pet food companies whose products contain too many carbohydrates for most species. They don't really teach nutrition in vet school either so that wouldn't know except to be led on by these companies that give them a lot of money and who provide them with biased research.

Amherst is in central Mass.

The last time we went there, Carol & I had an interesting meal in Northhampton at a Tibetan restaurant.

Amherst Chinese Food was a favorite back in the day, but that was many days ago.

Carbur's was fun, but that's long, long gone.

Definitely go to Noho, though. You may run into Thurston Moore.

I grew up in Holyoke, just south of Amherst. We consider it Western Mass. Basically, anyone in the 413 area code considers themselves "Western Mass". You have to get near the Worcester area to get into Central Mass.

I agree with most people that you'll have to go to Northampton for consistently good food, but I went to a place in Hadley, just a little south of Amherst, called Carmelina's At The Common's that was excellent. As an added bonus, the Jazz pianist who plays weekends is pretty good.

You should really go just a little further south and east to downtown Florence (maybe a 15-20 minute drive) and go to the Side Street Cafe. Great food at good prices and some decent vino to boot. Well worth the trip. I go there almost every time I visit my Mom in Holyoke.

I've always thought of central Mass as stretching from Worcester to Springfield and of the Berks as being western Mass, but I'll defer to a local.

It seems like a long way from Springfield to Lenox, but maybe that's just because I'm sick of driving already.

Why does that sound alarmingly like the way "modern medicine" is practiced today on humans?

This is terrible:
I think about Amherst as being "roughly 5 hours away from home."

I have only been there once when driving a buddy to some band camp back in the day.

Love that poet chick from Amherst, though. She's my American idol.

What was that BBQ place? I think it was in Sunderland?

The only place in Sunderland I've ever eaten at was the Teppanyaki steak house, Goten of Japan. I remember it as being a decent place but I bet I haven't been back in 10 years or more.

EDIT: a quick search on Yahoo brings up Bub's BBQ in Sunderland. Never heard of it or eaten there.

I've never eaten in Belchertown. No clue if there are any good restaurants there. When I lived out that way, Belchertown was mostly forest.

Bingo! It was good for early-80s college crowd grub. Wouldn't trade it for Redbones.

We have to get together at Redbones some night. It's been a while since I got my fill of pulled pork.
