Chris D, bundle up!!
Madison with a low of -19 and wind chill factor somewhere around -30!!!
I like cold weather, but that's a little ridiculous. And quite dangerous.
Jeff City is at 8 degrees right now with a nice, chilly breeze. "Feels like" -5.
And it is FUCKING COLD!

There was a dusting of snow on the porch at Casa Esmitz this morning. I had to put shoes on to drag the recycling to the curb!

In Ottawa right now (-28C, -18F), when you exhale on the windshield inside the car, a thin sheet of ice forms in seconds.

The kids are off and happy. My Camry (which gets the driveway spot) started with no problems. Keeping the gas tank full makes a huge difference.
School might be out until Tuesday (MLK Day holiday on Monday).
We used to get more blasts like this. The one thing is, at this cold, salt doesn't work on the roads. There is a lot of black ice around, and a lot of morons are tailgaiting. Doesn't help the blood pressure.

They had a 20 car pileup in northern Indiana because of black ice conditions combined with general idiocy.
And yes, you can only lower the freezing point of water so much. Salt is only good to about 14 degrees. After that all bets are off.
It was -1 here this morning. It's warmed up, though. Zero now...

Yeah, I know what you guys mean. Out here in Southern California it was something like 82-85 yesterday. It got so cold I had to change the fan from medium to low.
Did I mention I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt today?

Won't work with me, Serge. 32 years in Florida, most of which were with the fucking A/C running on Christmas day.
No thanks.
I've come to appreciate Summer, but I need all four seasons.

Chris -- I can send you some longjohns I'm not using. Nyuck nyuck.
I had to admit it's been cold the past few days here. Broke out a knit hat and sweatshirt, even.
But I can live with a KY January that's cold as a VT November, hey.

Enjoy the rain. That's what chased me back to northern climes: a winter's worth of 35 and rain every friggin' day.

Rainy winters are the absolute worst. Well, I guess it could be icing the entire time, but cold and rainy is pretty tough to beat.

I can deal with rain with much more ease. For one, I don't have to shovel it. I've shoveled enough snow for several lifetimes, thanks.
So far, there might have been seven days so far of temps below 30F. The last three winters in VT, I didn't even take my parka out of the closet, never mind in KY. The only cold issue I have here is due to my healing amputated finger. The new skin gets cold very easily and stings like a mofo when it does. Other than that, I've just shrugged. If this is winter, I can do it standing on my head.
But actually, there was almost no rain this past year and it's desperately needed. The paddocks were nearly bare of grass or even weeds. So a lot of rain I'd welcome so maybe next year my mares can be turned out to grass instead of dirt.
I've done too many VT winters, one too many in Montana, where one is always too many, and Portland, OR, too, if we're going to talk about rain.
Montana was the coldest of my cold experiences, no contest. I would never be there in winter again for any reason. The antifreeze -- and I always run nothing but antifreeze -- I don't water it down -- in my Plymouth solidified like jello. Never again.

62 degrees up my way.
We could, however, see the snow on the mountains.
Brrrrr!

An extreme weather alert is in effect in Niagara because temperatures are expected to drop to below -15C over the next few days. Niagara’s public health department issued the alert Tuesday. The purpose of an alert is to ensure homeless people and other members of the community vulnerable to the extreme weather are protected during the cold snap.
The Weather Network’s forecast calls for the temperature to drop to -12C tonight in Niagara Falls. Thursday night could be the coldest when it drops to -23C. The cold weather is expected to linger until at least Saturday when the high temperature climbs to -6C.
A network of social agencies across Niagara co-ordinates resources, finds shelter spaces and transports people to them. In Niagara Falls those agencies are Out of the Cold and Project SHARE, the Salvation Army and Niagara Regional Police.

Yesterday I was blowing bubbles outside, watching them float for a few seconds, then freeze and pop into feathery bubble ice shards. Pretty cool.

It was about 7F this morning. No gloves ever for me except when I clear the show off the car or off the steps or sidewalk - no driveway for us in Garfield, NJ
I like the cold because all I have to do is walk to my car from my place and from the car to my office or to the meetings I go to - or to the store and wherever else. The cold invigorates me also because I almost ened up up living in it full time about 4 and half years ago.
And I see people all the time who came in from the cold and I have 1 good friend who cannot get out of it - a friend who has found a new life without destroying his body with chemicals but he cannot get the other parts of his life together. From the damge of the past he has burned all bridges so despite being clean for almost 2-1/2 years, he has struggled with keeping jobs and apartments and has been spending most nights the last 3-4 months outside in the cold.
now if I think back to last 4 years on how many people I see in rehabs & detoxes who cannot get clean and continue to end up in the streets despite there being a solution to their problem, what it makes me is grateful to have my life back - all the way back - from the edge of being completly destitute
and the winter of 2004/2005 is in my heart - as then I had no car, no money, barely a place to stay, but I had hope - and my life had dramtically changed despite the fact I felt like shit most of the time and thought that my life was over - when in reality I was in for a new better life than I had ever known - I took buses everywhere I needed to go - and I was 44 years old - so I guess I got humble - maybe because I didn't want to not be able to *not* come in from the cold
peace and blessings
that's why I like the cold

Supposedly it feels like 1 degree here but it doesn't feel that cold to me. There was hardly a wind when I was out at lunch when the air is cold, dry and there is no movement I don't feel it as much as when it is warmer with a wind.

The midwest and east coast are now getting a blast of what we've been enduring in Alaska since the first of the year, and it's nasty!
For the past couple of weeks we've huddled up to stay warm in unusually low temperatures, mostly from -15 to -30°F overnight, often not warming to even 0° during the daytime hours. That's very unusual for Anchorage.
Low temperatures (minus any wind chill factor) have been reported as low as -80°F in parts of interior Alaska. The high in Fairbanks one recent day was -43°. That's insane!
We've been looking and praying for a warming trend, which we finally saw coming our way via a Low Pressure system building in the Gulf of Alaska. I looked at Patti while watching a newscast when that was first reported and said "now watch, we'll probably go from one extreme to the other and it will be 40° in a few days and raining."
Yep, that's exactly what happened. But, along with the warmer temps came horrendous winds, steady from 60-80mph overnight, gusting to over 100mph in parts of town. At Alyeska Ski Resort, just south of us, the wind was clocked at 122mph a couple of nights ago. It's loopy! And, now ... it's raining and 43°, just as I predicted.
Public schools and our two universities have been closed since Wednesday, which is virtually unheard of.
We're still hunkered down, but have plenty of food, music and videos.
Stay warm and be safe, everyone.

A couple of my long-time dancers have kids and grandkids in North Pole, Alaska and are frequent visitors, just got back from their Christmas visit, said the wind chills were in the minus 70s!! And I remember when they they helped the kids build their house, which was a big deal because it was in permafrost.
Here it's 73 degrees, time for my run.
