Writer John Mortimer, April 21, 1923 - January 16, 2009

Mr Mortimer brought pleasure to a lot of readers, including my dad. I haven't read much of his work yet, but he's on my list. I do recall one bit from a recent work of autobiography of Mortimer's: he's being interviewed on the BBC about the virtues of temperance while drinking champagne for breakfast.

RIP, sir.

I love Rumpole. Never read his other stuff.

The TV adaptations of Rumpole were pitch-perfect too, and I oculdn't read the books without hearing Leo McKern's voice.

I devoured everything he wrote up to and including the superb "Summer's Lease". One of the great prosaic wits of English letters.

Leo McKern served his creation very well.

I also recommend his autobiographical "A Voyage Round My Father".

RIP you old stout.
