The Electronics Deals Thread

Western Digital Passport portable 320GB drive is now $90 with free shipping at both Amazon & Buy.com

Kingston 8GB mobility pack (8GB micro-SDHC card w/ mini & standard SD adaptors + USB reader) is $20 at Buy.com

I just bought both at Buy.com

There's a coupon for $5 off $100:

http://www.couponmountain.com/Buy.co...buy.com_coupon

Buy.com weekly specials are worth following. I recently got 100 Memorex DVD-R's for $20 w/ free shipping, now the price is back up to $35.

This rechargable battery-powered 4-port USB hub looks like a great deal too:

I wonder what kind of deals can be had at Circuit City these days.

I saw one article warning that buyers should still comparison shop and not trust the reductions advertised, and of course be aware that nothing is returnable.

* * *

J.P. Morgan’s Imran Khan theorized in a research note Friday afternoon that Amazon.com (AMZN) could eventually be a beneficiary from the demise of Circuit City, which earlier Friday said it would close all of its remaining stores and liquidate.

I've been to 2 branches, yesterday and today. Nothing great yet. The liquidation is being done by a liquidation firm. Everything is 10% off ORIGINAL (but not necessarily list) price. Some items (including all CDs, I believe) are 20% off original price. Cables (and some other items?) are 30% off.

Despite the lack of great deals, the stores were mobbed. I read that you can only expect great discounts towards the end of the liquidation, when the pickins will be slim.

Prices were best pre-Christmas & have come up a bit.

Typically they raise the prices during a liquidation at first, then gradually down until there are only scraps remaining.

Also a lot of 'buyer beware' so far as no returns and warranty issues, and comparison shopping is still the rule.

What worries me is that only leaves Best Buy for electronics.

The prices are going to just zoom upward. You watch.

The Nikon P6000 compact (high-end) digital can be had at Adorama occasionally for $350. You have to check frequently though, because it bounces between that price and $450.

Sounds exactly like the crap "savings" at Tower Records when they went out of business and were handled by a professional liquidator.

Avoid this scam!

yes, I went to Circuit City yesterday--I'm driving back to mexico from the NAMM show in L.A.--and was underwhelmed by the discounts. A few things seemed like good deals, but nothing I would describe as a generous discount.

$12.99 + $5 shipping

Condition:
New
Product:
2 Excalibur Electronics R/C Micro Zoomers

Watch out, buy smart!! Went to an Atlanta-area CC that was closing down and found that even though hey had "Closeout Liquidation" pasted on everything everywhere the prices werre STILL higher than the Best Buy across the street!

"Sounds exactly like the crap "savings" at Tower Records when they went out of business and were handled by a professional liquidator."

Gottatellya, maybe 'cause of the difference in product, but during the last 4 weeks of Tower's existence I went religeously and was ALWAYS able to find a score, I still miss Tower!

My $89 320GB Western Digitgal Passport portable HD just arrived and I'm transferring music from my overburdened 160GB external HD that I paid $150 for about 5 years ago (I think that'll buy you at least 1TB these days). It's amazing how cheap hard drives have become. This thing is the size of a wallet, is powered off the USB, and is totally silent.

I need considerably less than 1 gig of it to back up docs, the rest is for music.

I am just now setting up my new (used) Mac Pro, that I got for about $1900. This morning I installed a terrabyte drive by Seagate--and yes, it was $150. I paid slightly more than that for a 500 gig about 1.5 years ago.

I found an ebay deal on new Ram from an Apple approved vendor--literally $15 per gig. Loaded that in too.

When I was an emusic subscriber in 1999-2000, in the unlimited days, I downloaded over 1,000 albums--wit dial-up! They were offloaded to CDs (I didn't get broadband until 2002 or a DVD writer until about 2005). Until about two years ago my portable music player was a Sony Discman that played MP3 CDs, so I'd pull one out of my binder and drop it in the player, with 10-12 albums on it. I had the CDs burned in groups of related music. Then any downloads and rips have been added over the years, so I ended up with about 200 MP3 CDs, and then there's all those dimeasozen downloads that are full CDs, which I eventually want to rip down. For loading to a portable MP3 player it can be a pain. I had started consolidating the CDs to DVD-R, which would get me about 60-80 albums on a DVD, then I saw this deal on the portable drive.

WD also makes a media console that you can plug into your audio system and TV to play audio and video files (including HD) off the drive (and it's expandable for multiple passport drives). It lists for $120.

You can get a refurbished Philips DVD player with Divx/Xvid & PAL support (plus all region once you enter a code you can find online) for $35, shipping included. It also has a USB port, so you can play files from a flash drive. I swear by these.

Any recommendations for a digital camera my wife should take when she goes to China next month?

Compact, simple and cheap is best.

I was thinking of something like this, unless you guys can suggest something with more bang for the buck:

Canon A590. Meets all above requirements. I got mine in November to replace my predecessor model A510 which I was happy with, but it only went up to ISO 400, and the 590 goes up to 1600 (I now use 800 for indoor food photos). It's reliable, intuitive, flexible, and comes with nice easy to use software.

I also like the fact that it has a viewfinder in addition to the screen, since I'm so used to shooting architecture and scenery that way and I can't get used to framing using the screen.

I second Pete's suggestion of the Canon A590. I've been a fan of Canon point and shoots (I'm on my second; a less compact and more expensive one). I bought the A590 for my nephew as a Christmas gift. I haven't used it myself, but i hear he's been real happy with it.

I bought one of these last fall and liked it so much I got my wife one for valentines day: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...e=UTF8&s=photo

Smaller than a pack of cigarettes and easy/fun to use. Mine is "brown" (really dark purple) and Ann's is blue. Don't know why the price is different for some colors.

I'm not sure what the technical differences between the Elph series (Chuck's) and the A5XX series are, but I think in this general range you can't go wrong with any of the Canons. The Elphs are smaller, if she's looking for that, but I like the meatier feel of the 590.
