Trades list

Virtually all of these are review copies, so they typically have a discreetly clipped corner to the booklet, a punched-out hole through the barcode, a sticker on the cover, &c. Some come with a little overprinting on the CD itself: “PROMOTIONAL COPY” or the like. If such things are a concern just ask & I’ll give an exact description of the damage.

Just updated this a bit (Sep 18th). --N

Ammons, Gene/Sonny Stitt - Left Bank Encores (Prestige) [w/ C Walton, S Jones, B Higgins, Etta Jones; poor sound but good music]

Arbenz, Michael/Glenn Ferris/Marc Johnson - New Delegation (Meta)

Art Ensemble of Chicago - The Meeting (Pi)

Bailey, Derek - Playbacks (Bingo) [Bailey playing over prerecorded tracks sent in by various people]

Braxton, Anthony and Lauren Newton - Composition 192 (For Two Musicians & Constructed Environment (Leo) [one of the earlier Ghost Trance Music releases, & one of the oddest: Newton is singing letters & numbers most of the time]

Brötzmann, Peter/Werner Lüdi - Wie Das Leben So Spielt (FMP)

Carter, Ron - The Golden Striker (Blue Note) [w/ Mulgrew Miller, Russell Malone]

Chalfant, Chris - Love and Light (Jyaku Sound) [all-Buddhist lineup w/ J Jarman, K Filiano; truthfully, this is probably only for the Jarman completist.....]

Clark, Sonny - Standards (Blue Note)

Dato, Carlo Actis/Yasuhiko Tachibana/Keisuke Ohta (TAO) - Tomorrow Night Gig (Leo)

Deane, J.A. - Never Never Land (Zerx)

Eberson, Jon/Bjørnar Andresen/Paal Nilssen-Love - Mind the Gap (Curling Legs)

Eisenstadt, Harris - Fight or Flight (Newsonic)

Emergency String 4tet w/ Carol Genetti - Motions (Last Visible Dog)

Ervin, Booker, Pony Poindexter, Larry Young - Gumbo (Prestige) [this combines a Poindexter session called Gumbo on which Ervin plays a sideman role alongside Al Grey, some further unreleased Poindexter material, and an unreleased Larry Young session with Ervin. No lost masterpieces here but assiduous collectors of Ervin & Young will find it of some interest.]

Evidence - Evidence: Musique de Thelonious Monk (Ambiances Magnétiques) [w/
Jean Derome]

Fazio, Enrico - Zapping! (Leo) [w/ Carlo Actis Dato]

49º Nord - Animal Language (Unit) [Hasse Poulsen, Bertrand Denzler, Christophe Marguet]

49º Nord – Tentacles (Av-Art)

Futterman, Joel/Ike Levin/Kash Killion - LifeLine (IML)

Grover, Steve - Breath (Invisible Music) [w/ Frank Carlberg]

Guy, Barry, Howard Riley, Philipp Wachsmann - Improvisations Are Forever Now: 1977-9 (Emanem)

Guzio, Gary - I Got a Secret (GMR) [w/ Sarah Jane Cion, Gerry Niewood]

Hammerschlag, Arnold - Sailing Neptune's Waters (Schlaggyman) [w/ Ethan Iverson. A very nice disc despite the awful labelname]

Jackson, Javon - Easy Does It (Palmetto) [w/ Lonnie Liston Smith]

Jazzstory - Jazzstory (Guildwood) [w/ Lina Allemano, Tim Posgate, Rob Clutton, Jean Martin]

Lancaster, Byard / Edward Crockett / J. R. Mitchell, The Out Cry (Lancaster) [this is pretty awful but maybe some Lancaster diehard will want it]

Lavelle, Matt - Handling the Moment (CIMP)

Lyttelton, Humphrey/Bruce Turner/Sandy Brown - Swing at the BBC (Upbeat)

Mandala - Mandala (Acoustic) [if you like “Nordic jazz” this’ll sound pretty good]

Mayhew, Virginia - Phantoms (Renma) [w/ Ingrid Jensen, Harvie S(chwartz), Allison Miller. Very nice mainstream date.]

New Jazz Trio w/ Matthieu Michel, Glenn Ferris, Carlo Schöb - “So...!” (Meta)

Niggli, Lucas - Big Ball (Intakt) [w/ "Big Zoom": Nils Wogram et al. This is the better of the two.]

Niggli, Lucas - Rough Ride (Intakt) [w/ "Zoom": Nils Wogram, Philipp Schaufelberger]

Parker, Evan - Synergetics - Phonomanie III (Leo) [2CD set, w/ Jin Hi Kim, G Lewis, T Lipere, C Mariani, S Namchylak, W Prati, M Vecchi, M Yoshizawa]

Parker, William/Joe Morris/Hamid Drake - Eloping with the Sun (Riti) [Not a guitar trio: Parker is on zintir, Morris on banjo & banjo-uke. World-musicky jam session.]

Petit, Didier - Deviation (La Nuit Transfigurée) [solo cello]

Roulston, Jay - Monkey Mind Control (Conduit)

Russell, John/Maarten Altena/Terry Day - The Fairly Young Bean (Emanem)

Schiano, Mario/Giancarlo Schiaffini/Sebi Tramontana/Bruno Tommaso - Free Jazz at the Philharmonic (Splasc(h))

Skronktet West, The - El (Spool) [Rosenberg, Shiurba, Robair, &c. Though this is billed as a "Post-Rock" recording this is nonsense: it's basically in a Braxton bag.]

Smith, Chas - An Hour Out of Desert Center (Cold Blue)

Spearman, Glenn - Free Worlds (Black Saint) [w/ Plimley, Ellis, Eneidi, Malik, Robinson, &c. A mixed bag of material, posthumously released, but most of it is quite good.]

Stöckli, Phil - Third Eye (Fresh Sound New Talent)

Sundin, Ronnie - Morphei (Häpna)

Tacuma, Jamaaladeen - House of Bass: The Best of Jamaaladeen Tacuma (Gramavision) [some of this is unspeakably cheesy, but there are also respectable tracks w/ David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Vernon Reid, &c]

Tamura, Natsuki - Hada Hada (Libra) [w/ Satoko Fujii on synth: one of their noisier excursions: caveat emptor. I now have two copies of the bloody thing.]

This Moment - Beautiful Line (9 Winds) [w/ Nick Fraser, Rob Clutton, Ronda Rindone. Three spoken-word tracks aren't so hot but the other tracks are fine]

Thomas, Jay - Blues for JW (McVouty) [nice mainstream session by a sax/trumpet doubler]

Thowsen, Pål - The Rest Is Rumours (Curling Legs) [very good fusion in a Lifetime vein, w/ Sidsel Endresen, Jon Eberson, Steinar Sønk Nickelsen]

Tradition Trio (J. Bauer/Silva/Turner) - Tone (a|l|l)

Vignola, Frank - Look Right, Jog Left (Concord) [w/ Allen Farnham; slick contemporary-fusion music: a rude shock if you’re expecting a dose of Frank’s nice post-Django guitarwork]

Weiss, Ezra - The Five A.M. Strut (Umoja) [w/ Billy Hart, Antonio Hart, M. Philip Mossman, &c]

Willis, Larry/Jack Walrath - Portraits in Ivory & Brass (Mapleshade)

Zekri, Camel - Venus Hottentote (La Nuit Transfigurée) [somewhere between roots music & Sonny Sharrock's Guitar. Nice, atmospheric disc, though the pieces do go on a bit; might appeal to fans of Sharrock or Joe Morris]

Walter--I'll paste in what I wrote of it below.

----

In the past couple of years the British saxophonist PAUL DUNMALL has engaged in an intriguing experiment by creating the Duns Limited Edition label (DLE). The CD-ROM format permits him to release discs with the rapidity and urgency of bulletins, and to experiment with a variety of genres—loud Coltrane-influenced free playing, folk musics, Indian music, spoken-word, even a pair of solo bagpipe discs. THE STATE OF MOKSHA (DUNS Limited Edition 022) (The State of Moksha. 61:48) (Dunmall, ss, vibes, vcl, perc, ocarina; Paul Rogers, b; Philip Gibbs, g, autoharp, gopichand, theremin. 14 Feb 2002, Bristol, UK) is the 22nd disc to be issued by this phenomenally productive cottage industry, and touches on most of Dunmall’s preoccupations. He opens the piece by intoning a brief text by Swami Sivananda concerning the state of moksha (the condition in which the soul is released from the fetters of transmigration) over a gentle drone. This drone is sustained throughout the piece, while the instrumental textures otherwise change continuously. Paul Rogers carries much of the piece’s weight, exploiting his six-string bass to produce an astonishing range of colours and textures, often in the cello or violin range rather than what one would expect from his instrument. The generally meditative texture of the hour-long performance is ruptured at its exact centre when Dunmall at last pulls out his soprano for an energetic three-way exchange with the guitarist and bassist; elsewhere he keeps to the margins of the music, delicately colouring it with a wash of vibes or the hoot of an ocarina. There are one or two lapses on the disc—notably an irritatingly plunky passage for vibes and theremin at the 40-minute mark, which is also marred by distortion on the vibes (on what is otherwise an excellently recorded disc)—but on the whole it sustains interest for its duration. The State of Moksha is something of a workshop disc, but also an intriguing musical document in its own right.

I'd take that off your hands. You want the new Berne set? (I've got two of those for some reason.)

Sure, those discs are all still up for grabs. All pretty good ones, esp the Mayhew, though not quite my thing.
