Monk's Casino is great news, for sure. Two interesting piano trios also (Dave Burrell and Michiel Braam). Good, good.
Unfortunately, right now the Casa seems to have problems with the city. It seems they don't have a license to present shows or something. I hope they sort it out quick, or at least find other temporary venues for the concerts, otherwise, it'll be quite hellish for the festival schedule.
Anyway, I hope the two The Thing gigs that were announced for May aren't gonna be canceled.

Suoni Per Il Popolo releases full schedule
Here more news:
9th Annual Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival’s lineup now available
Montreal, Quebec, CANADA (April 2, 2009) The Suoni Per Il Popolo, Montreal’s leftfield music festival, has just released the bulk of this year’s concert dates on its revamped website at www.suoniperilpopolo.org.
The festival will run from June 3 to June 30, 2009 and feature an eclectic variety of music genres such as avant folk, experimental electronics, free jazz and improv, loud rock, musique actuelle, noise/drone/freedom, pop, psych rock, punk, and twentieth century avant garde.
Recently confirmed highlights include legendary New York City DJ/producer Rich Medina (co-presented with Montreal’s hottest monthly, The Goods - www.goodsradio.blogspot.com); underground ambient metal gods Isis; indie darlings The Dirty Projectors; Montreal heroes CLUES, Menace Ruine, Alexandre St-Onge, Jonathan Parant, The American Devices, and Pas Chic Chic; Ambiences Magnétiques’ famed Ensemble SuperMusique and Mankind (D.Kimm & Alexis O’Hara); Jean the Hatchet, a new project featuring Arcade Fire’s Sarah Neufeld and Esmerine’s Rebecca Foon; new noise guru Sick Llama; contemporary dancers Hanako Hoshimi-Caines and Louise Michel Jackson’s Little Bang Theory with musical accompaniment by Lhasa, Joe Grass, Warren C. Spicer and Matthew Woodley; Old Time Relijun’s Arrington de Dionyso; Constellation Records artist Eric Chenaux; and violin improv nut C.S. Yeh a.k.a Burning Star Core.
As usual, the festival will be working with a wide array of local and international labels in its Independent Label Series. An annual family day, Popolo in the Park, is scheduled for June 20th, 2009 at Parc Lahaie in collaboration with Galerie Articule who will present an evening of outdoor animation screenings and live music. A workshop series, Tools of the Trade, will feature Pauline Oliveros, Dave Burrell, and Nicole Mitchell. The festival will also present a specially programmed series entitled Next Stop Freedom – Legends of the Canadian Underground. Featured artists will include John Oswald, Nomeansno, Gerard Van Herk (ex-Deja Voodoo), Christof Migone with Veda Hille, and Lisle Ellis (with Martin Schmidt from Matmos).
Festival tickets will go on sale in mid-April and a press conference will be announced shortly for early May.

I saw Monk's Casino at La Sala Rosa, under the auspices of the Suoni Per El Popolo, and enjoyed the daylights out of it. The audience was full of local luminaries and music writers. A terrific show.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: If all the Jazz musicians left NY suddenly, - particularly of the more creative, searching varieties - you could do a lot worse than start with Montreal as a source of vibrant, creative players to replenish the scene with. In fact, you could have started with the musicians in the audience that night...

A fine set last night (Friday the 26th) in Toronto. The band sounded great despite a terrible presentation by the festival in a terrible venue and even worse press. It was not even billed as one of the "featured shows" by the festival. Presented in a church setting with the band up on an empty, spacious altar area with no amplification and absolutely no sound presence. The piano obviously suffered the most but was at least audible. And it was scheduled simultaneously with Sonny Rollins! The Toronto Jazz Festival should be ashamed.
