I just got back from Chile. While I was there, it took 560 Chilean pesos to make a dollar. A grape picker at the Montes vineyard makes two pesos for every box of cabernet sauvignon grapes he (or she) picks. The Montes people said their pickers make about $300 a month. And, of course, the grape-picking season lasts about two months. I presume they pick other crops at other times. Driving through the Colchauga Valley, I saw fields of grapes, next to fields of corn, next to fields of strawberries, next to fields of aloe vera, next to apple orchards. So I imagine there is always something to pick. Although I could be wrong.
