The Henry Street Settlement has to be an improvement over the last two spaces--I hope.
I'm going to aim for the Thursday show for Ernest Dawkins. Maybe Friday if there's a hang of any sort, but Saturday doesn't inspire me at all.
I'm assuming the following will be an hour of tender ballads:
7:30 Special Set
Marshall Allen - reeds
Kidd Jordan - tenor sax
William Parker - bass
Henry Grimes - bass
Hamid Drake - drums

An evening of Ballads from Saturn and Jupiter.
I probably won;t be able to get in til Thursday though I'd love to see Thurman Barker in the group on Tuesday. It's been a while!
Looking forward to quite a few sets but in particular, Thurman on Tues, The Sunny Murray set on Thursday, the Ayler Project on Friday and Rob Brown with Craig Taborn and Nasheet Waits on Saturday.

Yeah, I'd love to catch that Murray set. That's a pretty smoking line-up.
Though, it truly breaks my heart that I'll have to miss Patricia Nicholson's "dancing".

for June 14th I hope to bring a crowd - I hope to have a few who don't know experience Hamid Drake from close-up. A few dead heads and a few who think they know jazz but have never heard any of *these* guys!
for me, I could complain that the fest has few new faces - and few of the bright stars from my universe - but one day I will travel far to see those guys...
but - to see the last real blues tenorman from Chicago play one more time with The King of New York and the great drummer almost makes me cry for joy now....
don't know how he is playing at 80 - but I can picture how it is going to be when he walks up to the stage with those big old shoes and I really do believe it will all come together when he gets in the slouch and that *sound* comes out of his horn - the sound of the great Fred Anderson - something makes me think that a few might be crying and dancing in the ailes one more time - maybe, maybe like it was those years back when the trio was a quartet with Kidd.
and damn - I wish Ulrich could take a plane to New York - damn do I want to see you, my friend - no matter whatver ever has happened or has been said - naybe I think I might not havelived without this music when everything else was falling apart in those years,,,,
and my youg friend who loves Brotz - he can't believe he will see him - but what he really wants is to see the Tentet - but maybe that will happen again too....
and maybe I even come back on the 15th to see the quartet with Barnes and Brwon joing the seminal bass/drums tandem

Missed this the first time around. Would be nice too hook up again, Steven but have to be back in town that weekend. But you'll enjoy it, I guarantee.
There is a slight chance that I mite be able to catch one of the early days of the fest as I will be passing thru New York from my daughter's graduation at Williams.

Can we expect to hear Fred at his best Uli?
have you heard him play recently?
I told my friends who have no idea who he is that they will see one the truly great tenor players who happens to be 80 years old.
They are already doubting me, I imagine
I told my friend that Brotzmann is 67 or 68, but he already heard him play on record, so he knows he must be invincable

Update
I talked with Patricia today. We'd like to do it Thursday night and she was thinking of Sabir leading the jam.
Need your input... like Sabir leading, other suggestions? Thursday cool?
thanks Lois

Thursday is good for me as long as I can confirm I am off on Friday the 12th.
My guess though is I get there for Ernest Dawkins @ ~ 9:00 unless I am real convinced by someone here that I need to see the William Hooker trio with Adam Lane (who is fine) - Can anyone tell me anything about Darius Jones who is listed as playing saxophone?

Oscar Micheaux was a pioneering independent black filmmaker, so I think the Hooker performance could be interesting. Don Byron did a great live score for a Micheaux film at Prospect Park some years ago.
Gotta go to work the next day, so no post-show hang for me.

well I actually don't do many late night hangs of any type anymore but it would wonderfull to meet and great as many fellow JCS'ers as possible
plus as I mentioned before, I think I need to see Sunny Murray at least one time - plus I have never seen Ernest Dawkins or any of those guys.

would hope that some of the ex-jazz fans might drop their jaded nature and show up for some screaming free jazz from NY, Chicago and the world
then again, I was once a bit jaded to music I thought I might not love anymore
come to find out that nothing could be further from the truth..

Thursday is good for me. Looks pretty definite that it'll be my first day in.
And I like Sabir. Haven;'t seen him since last June.
I'm going to start the night at Roulette for Urs Leimgruber, Okkyung Lee, and Peter Evans and get there for Sunny Murray's set.

I'll meet you there Steve. Most of the VF music is of little interest to me these days, but I gotta see the Reynolds "bounce" once again...
