Terence Blanchard - Bounce
Anybody checked this out? I really like it. It's NOT your basic head - solo - solo - solo- head and out disc. there are great shifts in time, different passages running through solos, and really interesting tunes. Young pianist Aaron Parks writes interesting music, guitarist Lionel Loueke adds a great sound, plays really percussive guitar instead of bop lines, and Terence has the most distinctive sound of any of the 'young guys' out there right now. You can always tell it's Terence.
For the last few years, I found his music getting old and tired, but this new band has energized him, don't write him off as a re-bopper, check this one out.

I am enjoying this one quite a bit. As you say, they do a lot of interesting things with rhythm. The material is good. Blanchard plays very well. I think it's a winner.

Another guy who puts out one fine album after another. Terence is well known and underrated at the same time.

You beat me to reviewing this, Peter. I'm really enjoying it--the tenor player and the drummer, in particular. I'm enjoying the up tunes a bit more than the ballads, which start off promising then kind of peter out a little (sorry, Peter). I like the album overall very much.

I have really been enjoying this record. Blanchard's band really sounds like a 'band'. To these ears it sounds like these guys have played together for quite a while. I really like the way the record is sequenced as well. Listening from start to finish really takes me on a musical journey, there's enough variety to keep it interesting but not too much that makes it sound disjunctive. Highlights for me include "Passionate Courage" and the relaxed vibe of "Footprints".

I've listened to it over and over, but only at work where I haven't been paying attention to the music. But I have been digging it big time, on some level.

Hate to be the lone dissenting vote. I don't like this record or much of any Blanchard studio recordings. I've seen him live twice, though and there's no denying he's an awesome talent. I also like his movie soundtrack work.
For me his records sound too contemporary and light weight with no heat or passion. In other words boring. Wandering Moon was'nt bad though.
