The Baltimore gig on May 9th is not at An die Musik ( and it never was!!).

Its at The Windup Space , 12 W.North Ave, Baltimore. Doors at 8pm.

I love using this space..a great vibe with full bar etc.

Also on the bill will be John Dierker and Will Redman duo. And Microkingdom (Dierker and Redman also with Dave Ballou and Marc Miller).

All for 10 bucks!!

The Lexington, KY show is FREE, so there is no excuse if you miss it. So excited! I'm doing two hours of Brotzmann on my radio show today to promote it.

I'm there, Don!

Happy I heard about it from a friend -- in Brooklyn....

Saw 'em in Chicago

I saw the trio in Chicago last night and it was really amazing. An otherworldly experience. Adding to it was the fact that Nasheet played the gig on my drums, because I was playing in a rock show later that night at the same venue and he didn't have any drums. If anybody else can catch this trio, do it!

I'm not usually much of a Brötzmann enthusiast but if they record I'll check it out. Sounds like a very interesting group.

I anxiously await your thoughts on the show, Gary

I will be seeing him with a different trio @ Vision Fest on 6/14

His other show coming up in NYC on 5/10 is solo and I am going to miss that one

It was a good show. Not a revelation but a good show. I enjoyed it. I'm still amazed that they played here and a much larger audience than I'd expected for an out show. It would have been a respectable turnout anywhere. I was wondering how many people there knew ahead of time what they were getting into.

Brotz was as we know him and was interesting to hear him with Nasheet Waits and Eric Revis. The other times I've heard him were with Parker and Drake. All were playing well. As I have each time I've heard him, I liked Brotzmann on the tarragato and tenor the best. First set he played alto and then tarragato. I didn't stay for the second set so wasn't there to hear if he broke out the tenor. Nice to hear some live music again.

If you're passing on this only because it's a solo gig, you may want to double check on it, since I received a promotional email which claims the Cake Shop show will feature this trio.

Cake Shop is a solo from Brotzmann plus another group. The trio ends a few days before as Eric and Nasheet had previous commitments.

I am looking forward to presenting Brotzmann solo in Baltimore on Saturday..no qualms about having no trio etc. Just him and his horns sounds perfect to me!

Taragato, oh yes, you mean the single-reed, conical-bore woodwind, created in Hungary around the turn of the century shortly after the invention of the saxophone. I knew that.

I didn't know what it was, the first time I heard him. Looked like a clarinet until you looked closer, but it didn't sound like one.

The last I heard him (way back in the Dark Ages) in that "onstage" series at the Flynn the taragato playing was among the highlights for me too. He certainly has a distinctive sound on that instrument.

You mean he doesn't sound like all the other taragato players?
