North Sea Jazz - 2009: a critical note
NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL - 2009
Last weekend, the 10th up to the 12th of July 2009 the 34th edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival had been scheduled at the Ahoy in Rotterdam ( The Netherlands) – hundreds of concerts - hundreds of artists and ten-thousands of visitors from all parts of the world. Friday the 10th of July 2009, when I visited the festival, 18,000 visitors made it feel comfortable – on Saturday and Sunday with almost 25,000 visitors each night, the venue was jam-packed.
For me it was the seventh or eighth time I visited the festival, so I'm a youngster - but during the festival I picked up somewhere, that a lot of regular visitors don't feel comfortable anymore and long for the The Hague days.

Man! I am exhausted. It's becoming too crazy packed for my taste. This running around, trying to NOT miss anything on the agenda is killing the fun part for me, remembering the Hague days. Nevertheless I heard some goo stuff but friday night was a killer: we came in late, missed John Zorn's Dreamers and started off with Stefano Bollani, jumped to B.B. !!!!"! and loved it. Then on for a bit of Fred Hersch which was nice but I had to go see Eric Vloeimans Gatecrash, a superb band but always I had in the back of my mind the missing of Hersch . Then again missed Zorn's Masada for the a Cecil Taylor solo with only a couple of dozen people in the audience and a very intense and great, intimate play followed by Josh Redman' s reed trio at its best. With Taylor at the end I probably would have had to enjoy a bit less of Grolsch to find some sleep
Saturday found me in a bad mood, having to let go off Paolo Fresu but I wanted Mehldau,Haden and Rossy even without Lee Konitz. I liked it but again: always that feeling of what I was to miss. We had John Zorn twice that day and I enjoyed the trio as well as Kokhba with a fab rythm section incl Joey Baron, then danced away into the night with Roy Hargroves BB. I am not too big a fan of RH but that was pure fun.
Sunday Derek Trucks was set and we missed Yuri Honing (sorry Yuri), then had a couple of here and theres but were just tired and left early for some Grolsch
Its been more like a trade exhibition where you have to visit different booth's in different halls and you keep running and running. Don't know if I'll be back 2010

Great to learn how you survived on Friday !! I started with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, then Hank Jones and Fred Hersch and I finished with Cecil Taylor. I'll be back here later with some reviews !!

Yeah, I think friday was a good day, all fresh all superb music. But you get weary over that running around, don' t you think? My plan was to collect most of those, the Average Joe in Europe won't get to see every saturday, that made me miss Tineke Postma with T.L. Carrington and also Susanne Alt, who I heard were just two great concerts
On the other hand, I find it rather disturbing to find all that hype about Jamie Cullum, Candy Dulfer, Adele a.s.o,
I am happy that I have little less than a years to make up my mind

exhausting just about summed up my experience a couple of years ago. and i found that i missed some groups that started out being priorities, just because of the overlapping schedules and the running, running, sweating, sweating, packed venues, standing to hear sets, and running some more. ended up watching Zawinul on the big screen instead of participating in the mosh pit! as it turned out, it was my last opportunity in life to see him perform. luckily, though, i bumped into him later that evening at a hotel in Rotterdam. i was extremely grateful for that exchange. he was gone about 7 weeks later.

Festival of extremes
Festival of extremes:
VANGUARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA versus CECIL TAYLOR
On Friday the 10th of July: Two concert being worlds apart – the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and …………. the great master of free-jazz Cecil Taylor.

One of the strengths of the festival is its various number of concerts – its various styles and trends – from swing up to free jazz; from soul and world music to fusion and house. All these different styles presented, suit all tastes.

Speaking of worlds apart: Candy Dulfer, Adele, Seal, Melody Gardot those are "outta space" compared to C.T.
This marketing effort to attract different (younger) audiences is simply pissing off the ones who have been there before, like me.

Fred Hersch Trio + 2 live at North Sea Jazz 09
FRED HERSCH TRIO + 2
Fred Hersch introduced us during his five days tour in Europe, which brought him to Paris , Ghent, Amsterdam and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, to John Hebert on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. For the Ghent and Rotterdam concerts he had enlarged his trio with trumpet player Ralph Alessi and tenor player Tony Malaby up to his Fred Hersch Trio + 2, a group active for five years now.
