The Chicago Jazz Ensemble Ends Season With Chicago Symphony Orchestra

THE CHICAGO JAZZ ENSEMBLE®,
AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JON FADDIS®,
CELEBRATE THE 10th AMERICAN HERITAGE JAZZ SERIES
IN SEASON FINALE WITH CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
AT SYMPHONY CENTER JUNE 5, 8:00 PM

CHICAGO, May 20, 2009 -The Chicago Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jon Faddis, concludes its 10th American Heritage Jazz Series on June 5 at 8 pm, when The CJE, with Regina Carter as special guest, takes the stage at Symphony Center for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Echoes of Nations: Dvořák Festival in a performance of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington: "Black, Brown and Beige" and "The New Orleans Suite."

The CJE is dedicated to reviving and presenting the great works of Duke Ellington, who was mentored by Will Marion Cook, a student of Dvořák.

MacArthur-Award winner Regina Carter combines outstanding technical proficiency with compositional and improvisational gifts to create a fresh, aggressive approach to the violin and her music. In her hands, the instrument reveals its melodic side and its potential for percussive expression. She coaxes her instrument to accomplish musical feats that listeners thought were impossible to do with the violin. Born in Detroit, her first musical influence was Motown R & B; however, she began studying classical violin and headed toward a career as a soloist in a major orchestra. Then she heard Jean Luc Ponty and her ear, mind and heart turned to jazz. Today Carter stands among the leading jazz disciples of violin.

Symphony Center is locatedat 220 South Michigan Avenue. For more information and tickets, which are $20 - $70, visit www.cso.org or call (312) 294-3000.
