"Guy" flicks

You know what I mean, it's those movies which are all-guy, with the ladies pretty much in the background. Guy movies have a basic requirement - testosterone has to be sprayed all over the screen (intellectual and artistic content not necessary):

The Dirty Dozen
Dirty Harry
The Magnificent Seven
The Great Escape
The Dawn Patrol
Gunga Din
The Longest Day
Guns of Navarone
Das Boat
Any Tom Clancy-based flick
Unforgiven

I watched Is Paris Burning last night. The only female character of any depth (and none of the characters had much) was Leslie Caron, who appeared early in the film.

The Longest Day is aptly named.

Don't forget Das Boot. Or that great two-character film with Goodspeak and Dolan.

Three big favorites (undoubtedly characterizable as "guy flicks", though not reducible to such):

Fight Club
Heat
This Is Spinal Tap

I just saw that recently for the first time. It was great, and both Falk & Arkin were brilliant.

Bugs with beaks ?

The guacamole act of 19..

I heard somewhere that Andrew Bergman , ( So Fine and the Freshman ) wrote those 2 parts with Falk and Arkin in mind. If that's true he nailed it.

I agree on Fight Club although I suppose almost anything with Pitt awards it less than total guy flick status.

Heat is very much a love story (or several mini love stories combined) wrapped in a heist film. The relationship between Kilmer and his wife was superbly played, and even though the sequence with DeNiro and his new girlfriend slowed the film down some, to me Heat was the very first combo love story/buddy/heist film ever made (or at least, the first made well).

This Is Spinal Tap has universal appeal.

I respectfully submit your choices are a bit off.

Hm, stone, I stand behind my caveat (I expect you're looking for "reducible" selections?). I think all are rather obviously testosterone-loaded. I also fully expect that the fan bases of each are significantly male-dominated - that's certainly my experience in discussing them over the years.

I wonder what the relative fan base between genders is for Cassavetes films.

I'll guess the answer is "polluted by small number statistics".

The only other big fan of "Gloria" I have "met" here is patricia, iirc. In real live I think watching it with my wife numerous times mite be responsible for me liking it as much. Maybe Gloria is Cassavetes chick movie. otoh I have never met anybody who thinks like me that "Love streams" is his best and I have only seen it once.

Now we're getting somewhere. Except for Dr. Strangelove. Peter Sellers is just funny, not "guy" funny. And may I add the following testosterone-laced obscurity:

I beg to differ. Any movie where a guy rides an H-bomb to the ground while waving a cowboy hat is by definition a guy movie.

More:

All John Woo movies
Bad Lieutenant
Mean Streets
Gangs of New York

Heat is indeed a love story as much as a heist flick.

Another heist/love story is a lesser-known one, Thief featuring James Caan and a superb cast, who are totally believable.

This is one of my favourites.

It's directed by Michael Mann, before he did "Heat" and the look and the attention to detail with regard to the plot [jewel thievery/safe-cracking] are really quite remarkable.

Lots of shoot-em-up and power-wielding macho scenes.

Not my favorite, but I kind of liked the kid despite the seeming consensus that it's one of the worst performances in the history of cinema.

"Gloria is, I think, a good character study/hiest film and the kid in the original was well-cast.
This is another case in which the re-make is to be avoided like the plague.
The other, and certainly not the only one, is the re-make of "The Vanishing"

Gena Rowlands was perfect as Gloria.
Sharon Stone in the re-make..................not so much.

The best part of Heat is at the beginning when DeNiro and his boys blow everything up.

Now that's high octane testosterone.

The problem with Diner is that's there no gratuitous violence. There has to be some shootin', killin', explodin' to be a guy flick. Wild car chases are good so maybe Diner qualifies with the car stuff.

Kelly's Heroes is a crappy flick, but with very high level of hormones.
