Godammit! Hasn't anyone ever heard of Hans Reichel?

A truly weird and wonderful, but acquired taste, very much like anchovies. I have yet to encounter anyone who's heard his stuff, and few who have even heard of him. The Death of the rare bird Ymir/Bonobo Beach is a classic (well 2 really) of improvised music. His stuff incorporating the Dachsaphone (a self made instrument - bowed wood) such as Lower Lurum, an operetto of sorts, is well worth getting into.
Check it out here;

His homepage is bizarre and has to be seen to be believed -
http://www.daxo.de/

He makes the oddest guitars, with for example, necks that extend beyond the bridge. It accounts for his sound being amongst the most distinctive I've ever heard. His melodic sensibility is very strong, with a certain amount of 'folksy' elements to it.

Great to hear it! I've hunted down as much of his stuff as i can over the years. You got any faves yourself? Stop Complaining/Sundown also gets an honourable mention in my book.

..actually not in a very looong time. He is a loony in the best of senses
I had the "pleasure" to see him on stage a few times in the 90's. I don't remember the daxofone but he sure is a fine string picker. Never saw the September Band with Shelley Hirsch giving a soundalike Edith Piaf. Must have been a one of a kind experience.

I forgot you were from the same neck of the woods. You're a jammy bastard! (that means you're a lucky, lucky fellow). I'd love to get the chance to see him but that (as with so many other artists) would probably entail an international trip on my part, and therefore a (relatively) major undertaking.
I take it you mean he was performing standards at one point - with this Shelley Hirsch person?

Hans Reichel and standards? Good heavens, I doubt that he'd ever listened to anything like a standard at all let alone play!
This woman used to "fake" (wait a minute) the Edit Piaf voice and put it above that very particular daxofono nois'a'rama
Really weird

Baksheesh, I'd have to go for: Death of the Rare Bird Ymir, Dawn of the Dachsmann, and Lower Lurum. His pre-daxophone work on the first of those records is jaw-dropping.

I'd second that appraisal Jason! There's a great twofer of Ymir and Bonobo Beach on CCD, i was lucky enough to pick it up a few years back in this funky second hand CD shop in Berlin. I had to make some tough choices that day, 'cause my credit was limited, and they also had 5 or 6 of the Cecil Taylor in Berlin discs. I ended up going for Remembrance as well. I think i made a good choice.

Yes, but what's god (which one, anyways) have to do with damning anything here. I never heard Jason's picks but sounds like I should someday. Man, now that you mention him, I'd almost forgotten about him. Heard Hans at an FMP Festival in Chicago back in the late 90's (I think). My first exposure. He played with the September Band and a few ad-hoc sets. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Later, I picked up the September Band disc, and Buben..plus w/Rudiger Carl, Stop Complaining Sundown, and Angel Carver w/Tom Cora. Thanks for reviving his name and the music. It's been a while.

I have that one, it's not bad... Old Onkel Boskopp shows up quite a bit on Reichel's records - he's got a few preludes on Lower Lurum, for a start. Now there's a great album for you.
